Today we’d like to introduce you to Kammy Mitchell.
Hi Kammy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up loving art of almost any kind, I have painted and drawn for as long as I can remember. I have experimented a lot with different styles, pottery, sewing, graphic design, and so many others. I actually went to college straight of high school for graphic design, but it didn’t really feel like that was what I was supposed to be doing, so I didn’t finish. I still do quite a bit of freelance graphic design to this day. Once I became a mom in 2023, I was trying really hard to figure out a way to make money, be at home, and still do something I enjoy. I always knew that I would do something creative, but I think in the last year it’s felt like it’s really happening!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have definitely had my fair share of challenges along the way! The first one I remember was graduating high school and still being unsure what I wanted to do. I enjoyed so many things, it was hard to just pick one and roll with it. When I went to school for graphic design, I felt like I had made a mistake, which was discouraging, and made me rethink having a career in art at all. Another big one was when I found out I was pregnant and had to change my life completely. At the time, I had a job as a seamstress, and I absolutely loved it! By the time I wanted go back to work, though, my job no longer existed. That was tough, because it was the best job I ever had, but I’m grateful because it made me very sure that I wanted to do something creative.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do so many different things now, but it all boils down to painting! In the last year I’ve started painting clothes, and making hand painted magnets. As of right now I’m the most proud of finishing my first full collection of canvas paintings and having them on display. I think what sets me apart from others is that I almost always have a mixed media element. Aside from the clothing and magnets, all of my canvas paintings are acrylic and yarn, plus UV light paint or black light paint. I really like making things that people can get more use out of than just hanging on a wall! (Although I love making wall art too)
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I would define success by being able to support the life you want to live by doing something you love.
