Conversations with Dino O’Dell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dino O’Dell.

Hi Dino, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a children’s musician, storyteller and author. I was an elementary music teacher at Brookside Day School (now Brookside Charter School.) At that time I was also playing music in bar and wedding bands. I combined live music with my education background and now I travel the country performing children’s shows about geography, astronomy, earth science and early literacy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Looking back at my career I would say that I am a slow learner. But I was very lucky to have good mentors and collaborators.

My first experience as a composer and teacher was at a theater where the artistic director, Peter Donaldson, was an expert at integrating art into education. He taught me the power of interactive theater.

I played guitar for Jim Cosgrove, AKA Mr. Stinky Feet, a nationally known Kansas City musician. I played in his band and he was generous teaching me the business side of children’s music.

Kadesh Flow is a Kansas City–based rapper and trombonist. Together, we’ve developed a dynamic collaboration that’s resonating with students and schools across the city.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The shows are structured like a lesson plan, but instead of having ten minutes to prep, I have 200 hours. Music, storytelling and interaction are all powerful tools to capture children’s attention, and once you have their attention, you might as well teach them something worthwhile.

What makes you happy?
In my work, I love that what I do makes a difference. Also, I truly enjoy playing guitar. That it’s my job to write songs and play music for a living is truly a bonus.

In my personal life, I like to ski, hike and paddle board with my wife and son. My son is 15 years old, so humor, especially obnoxious humor, has a prominent role in our home at this time. And I’m okay with that. As a matter of fact, I may take part in it.
