Conversations with Heather Versfeld

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Versfeld.

Heather Versfeld

Hi Heather, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From the very beginning, this has been about more than just serving meals. Opening Prima Facie with my husband, Leon and our children, Annike and Johannes was never part of some long-term plan; it was a step of faith, guided by our desire to bring people together and to glorify God in the process. From lively lunches to milestone celebrations in the Bistro to casual coffees, and grab-and-go meals in the Market, every detail was crafted with intention – to make the guests feel welcome, seen and cared for. Our scratch kitchen, seasonal dishes and playful cocktail names (a nod to Leon’s law firm upstairs) are just part of the fun. The real reward is seeing people connect – on a date night with live piano in the background or simply picking up a quiche through the old bank drive-thru. My years as a private flight attendant taught me the value of thoughtful service on the go, which is why in-flight catering is just another way we are able to extend hospitality .
Ultimately, this business belongs to God and we are simply the stewards. As the scripture outside the door of the Bistro states: ” This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” Psalms 118:23. And it truly is. Every plate, every interaction and every smile shared within these walls is a reflection of His goodness. Our deepest hope is that everyone who walks through the doors feels it too.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have had our challenges, but because this project has been a walk of faith, similar to the Versfeld & Hugo Law Firm, we continue to give the building and the people in it to God everyday.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We’re a local family who believes in building spaces that bring people together — to share meals, make memories, and feel known. Prima Facie Bistro and Market was born out of a love for hospitality, a fascination with food , and a vision to create something lasting in our community. Every detail, from the interior design to the menu, has been personally shaped by our family and team. We’re proud to be a scratch kitchen in a time when that’s increasingly rare. Proud to honor the beauty of restored history in our building. Proud to serve dishes that are both approachable and exceptional. And most of all, proud to create a place where people feel seen, welcomed, and well-fed—in every sense of the word.
Some of the things that set us apart are the dual-concept – one kitchen: refined dining + fast-casual market, scratch kitchen using fresh, quality ingredients – from deboning our own, local chicken and hand cutting our steaks – to preparing all sauces and dressings fresh daily, freshly made desserts and crafted cocktails add to the flavor. Our historic setting with private vault dining and cozy Mezzanine level over looking the dining room are also not something you see everyday. Family ownership with deep community roots – Heather was born and raised here in Platte County. Her father was a retiree of TWA/American with 48 years of service to the company. A customer first, hospitality approach philosophy in all we do is another thing that sets us apart in 2025.
At Prima Facie, you’re not just a guest—you’re part of our story.
Prima Facie has recently been recognized by the community and industry alike, including being named Best New Restaurant by Ingram’s Magazine of Kansas City. We are also proud recipients of Silver for Best Fine Dining and Bronze for both Best All-Around Restaurant and Best Happy Hour in the Best of Kansas City 2025 awards.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
To grow—in business, leadership, or life—relationships are everything. Hospitality naturally fosters those connections. Before we ever opened a restaurant, Leon and I were constantly hosting and bringing people together. My best advice? Be genuine. Be kind. Show up as your best self every day.
