Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Christine.
Hi Kayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Some songwriters tell stories. Others make you feel them. Kayla Christine does both. Kayla’s piano-driven ballads are deeply personal, often drawn straight from the pages of her journal. If she’s written about it, she’s lived it.
Raised in the Kansas City suburbs, Kayla grew up in a house filled with music. Her father, a musician, inspired Kayla. Following in his footsteps, she began singing before she could even talk. Music was always there for her, but it wasn’t until she accidentally turned a journal entry into her first song at 16 that she realized she had something to say. That song, “Happy or Not,” was the first time she saw how her words could resonate with others. Since then, she has been using her songs to capture the quiet, complicated emotions of growing up and finding her place in the world.
Her sound is delicate yet powerful—think Lizzy McAlpine’s raw storytelling and the sparse, heart-tugging production of Sinead O’Connor. Though still early in her career, Kayla has already had defining moments. But perhaps the biggest breakthrough has been internal: staring down imposter syndrome and realizing that music isn’t about being perfect—it’s about making space for yourself. Kayla lives by one simple motto: Here’s to trying your best.
Kayla’s newest song “Dorothy” released on May 30, 2025. In her new song, Kayla tackles the struggle of homesickness, the emotions that wreck you when feeling out of place, and the tireless journey back home. Kayla pulls stories from her Kansas upbringing, referencing “The Wizard of Oz” and relating to it’s main character. “Dorothy” can be found on all streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle has to be imposter syndrome. Telling yourself you belong somewhere when all you feel is inferior is a tough battle to overcome. I do not believe the waters are ever smooth. There will always be obstacles, but still waters do not make a skilled sailor. Learning from your mistakes is key to success.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer, songwriter, recording artist, and performer. I have been singing my whole life, but began my musical journey as Kayla Christine at 16. At the same time, I was writing my first songs and recording, releasing, and promoting them. I write both the lyrics and compose the instrumental parts with piano being my primary instrument. I perform in the greater Kansas City area, playing at local coffee shops, public markets, and venues. I recently had the opportunity to play in the Gospel Lounge at Knuckleheads where I showcased my original songs and shared the stage with two other local female performers. That show was a defining moment in my career so far.
Kansas City is full of local performers, but what sets me apart is my stories. I write all my songs about experiences that happened to me, therefore no one else can write the songs I am writing. They are unique, and you cannot hear them anywhere else. My songs cut through mundane everyday life and touch the fragile human heart.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would not say I believe in luck. Instead, I choose to believe in talent, practice, blessings, and a higher purpose than I can ever imagine. Humans are each blessed with their unique special talents, but honing your craft with practice is just as important. Every portion of our life is ordained by God; nothing happens because of sheer coincidence. To reference both Charlotte Brönte and Taylor Swift, I believe we all have some invisible string tying us to something, someone, or somewhere; We just have to unravel it.
