Today we’d like to introduce you to Harryson Salcedo.
Hi Harryson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, my story in the creative world has been broad. For those who don’t know, I am Harryson Salcedo, better known as Harry Salce in the creative world. I am an artist (singer + producer), graphic designer, and videographer. I was first introduced to music by my dad. When I was around 9 years old, he gifted me my first guitar. My dad, Domingo Salcedo, would always play me songs growing up in the Dominican Republic, because he also plays the guitar, so he gifted me one. My mom, after seeing my interest in wanting to play the guitar she paid private lessons to a friend of ours to teach me guitar, and that was my very first encounter with music. I was always attracted to creative stuff around me, painting, drawing, music, sports, cooking, etc. When I was around 12 years old, my very first encounter with producing music was and is a very funny story. I remember I downloaded a software called “Fruity Loops” on my brother’s old PC, which barely worked and was extremely slow. I remember I started playing with sounds that at the time sounded not so great, but to me, it was the best thing in the world. I remember when exporting a 45-second audio, it would take hours to load at the minimum quality possible. I always think all of it had to happen to get to where I am now. I have released three studio albums, completely written, produced, mixed, and mastered by me, with a song called “Vancouver” with over 12k streams on Spotify. I make music both in English and Spanish.
I am also a Graphic Designer and Videographer, currently a senior at UMKC seeking my bachelor’s in Graphic Design. Growing up, as mentioned before, I was attracted to all the things that involved creatively using my senses. Music for my ears, colors, shapes, rhythm, symmetry for my eyes, I loved touching textured things like grass and sand, I also find smells fascinating because they can take you back in time, as well as food tasting. I designed a magazine called SENSES, my junior year at UMKC, explaining how the senses creatively impact creatives when finding inspiration. All of these things led me to want to become a designer and swim through the creative waters. I was introduced to graphic design late, around my freshman year in college, where I changed my major from Film, which I had taken and done for four years in High School and a year at UMKC at the time, because to me, graphic design felt more like the thing I wanted to do. Make people feel things through color, shapes, letters, etc. I loved that idea, so I switched, and now here I am. I also make content online (Instagram reels) at @harry.salce where I talk about graphic design and tips in general for creatives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been easy at all. Nothing worthy ever comes easily. I moved from the Dominican Republic to America pretty young, so even the language barrier was a struggle for me. I learned English in school in a program called ESL (English Student Learners). My parents have been divorced since I was 8 or so, so I grew up with my brothers and my mom at home mainly. Even attending University didn’t feel like something that would be possible for me just because of finances, but I serve a God almighty who gave us so many blessings, and somehow we always made things work. No money, no language barrier, no situation got in the way of me chasing my dreams, as I am currently doing all of these things I love, thanks to God. We go back and visit the Dominican Republic every other year, but to me, both feel like home as well.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have released three studio albums, completely written, produced, mixed, and mastered by me, with a song called “Vancouver” with over 12k streams on Spotify. I make music both in English and Spanish. The name of my albums is “Cerca de Casa,” which translates to “Near Home,” and that album I made thinking on how far away I felt from the Dominican Republic during those pandemic years. My second studio album is called “Volando por mi Ciudad” which translates to “Flying over my City,” which was when I was finally able to go back to DR and wrote most songs there. Lastly, my lastest work “Y Si Se Cae el Sol?” which personally I think is my most experimental work yet. The album covered I designed for it got featured at UMKC’s art gallery show in 2025.
