Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Martinez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started getting into hair when I was in high school, after I graduated I decided to go into cosmetology school. I’ve been doing hair since 2013 but after Covid it became more less desirable to do so I decided to go into waxing so I could keep using my license. I was used to waxing the face but the last 2 years I’ve really focused on body waxing, especially Brazilians very satisfying doing those. The last job I had really made think into getting my own place and going solo so I could enjoy being my own boss and making my own schedule so from there I decided to open my own suite and focus on what services I still love doing. That’s where Bitter Sweet Wax became a thing just enough bitterness to your sweetness.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not an easy road. My family and I moved to the US when I was 10 so from there had to adjust to new life, new language and culture. I was the First one in the family to graduate high school so that was an achievement from there I got my cosmetology license. While in school I had odd jobs working in fast food just to get by but it was not something I wanted to keep doing for the rest of my life so I’ve tried to make my mom proud of who she has raised and brought over to this country into becoming something good. I know being a waxer isn’t something super amazing but being my own boss it is to me, knowing I have made it this far truly grateful! Now I’m just trying to make a role model for my daughters that they can do whatever they set their minds to.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do men’s haircuts and I specialize in Brazilians as well. Mainly I do a lot of waxing, I love it! I’m proud that I’ve pushed my self out of my comfort zone and be on my own, the thought about failing is was a constant thing in the back on my mind. So I just want to prove to people I can do this! I think what sets me apart from others my own style and my vibes, I like people to feel comfortable in my space so I take my time and I pay attention to detail.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I like to keep up with other waxers and see what trends are up. Even trying to do TikToks to get some of the newer generation in.
