Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Reed.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Gardner, KS just south of where I’m at now in Olathe. I played sports growing up and in high school took an interest in lifting to improve my athleticism (and get bigger arms, like any teenage boy). From there I pursued my exercise science and nutrition degrees from K-State where I explored and found even more ways to love lifting and moving my body for health, as well as fostering a love for cooking and nutrition to fuel my goals in the gym. As I wrapped up my time at K-State I could see myself in many of the healthcare roles I’d been introduced to during my studies, but wasn’t sold on any one in particular (I just knew I didn’t care to sit behind a desk) so I began to shadow people in all sorts of sectors of the health field and one day got to hang out with the chiropractor I grew up seeing in Olathe.
He framed his work as “getting to solve a different puzzle every 20-30 minutes, two people can come in and point to the exact same spot and it hurts for a completely different reason, and needs a completely different treatment” and I was sold. I enrolled in chiropractic school at Cleveland University in Overland Park upon graduation from KSU. At chiropractic school I found a club that fostered a more active approach to chiropractic, that considered more than just the adjustment when it comes to successful treatment, and really framed human movement and exercise to be the foundation of health, and thats the thought process that I still carry into my practice today. I have branded myself as an “active lifestyle and performance chiropractor”, because when you own your own business you get to make up your own job title!
I have been practicing now for 7 years, and am in the. middle of year 5 at my own practice, Trajectory Spine + Strength. I believe that every issue I am able to address within my scope here at the office ultimately comes back around to movement and exercise as the ultimate cure. I support people’s recovery and healing with other modalities and techniques like adjustments, dry. needling, cupping, and hands-on muscle work, but the most important thing I do is find people impactful exercises they can take home and continue making their own progress outside of the office and make them less reliant on the table treatment. It’s really about empowering people to take some of the care into their own hands by way of whatever movement they need.
For the last year or so I have also taken a particular interest in helping dads live healthier lives and pass on generational health habits and mindsets to their kids through “Healthy Dad Coaching”. It’s custom and comprehensive health coaching for dads that focuses on the 4 main pillars of health — nutrition, movement, stress management, and sleep. All dads have different lives and unique circumstances, so we need to find them equally unique ways to reach their health goals that fit seamlessly into their busy lives, while respecting the basic principles of health transformation. This health coaching really allows me to use my knowledge, experience, and guidance in a more broad sense than what I use in the chiropractic office and work with a niche demographic that I have a lot in common with being a busy dad myself, juggling entrepreneurship, a 3 year old daughter, and a boy on the way in July.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not been a smooth road at all. I consider myself an awesome clinician and coach, but from a business perspective I still have a lot I’m working out and working on. I have thrown a lot of proverbial spaghetti at the wall, and continue to do so just to see what sticks, what echos with my audience, what complementary offers and services I can bring in to better serve existing patients and what will drive the right new patients in looking for the solutions I provide!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The thing I’m most proud of, that I think sets Trajectory apart from many other chiropractic practices, is the fact that I provide patients with exercises and lifestyle advice that empowers them to take care into their own hands.
While the comprehensive and stacked table treatments I provide are extremely powerful at getting people out of pain, I won’t gatekeep simple movement solutions for peoples pain, even if it means less reliance on the table treatments that only I can provide.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by the impact that I have on people, based on the insights I provide. I want to be a guide and educator for people looking to live healthy, long, (relatively) pain-free lives while being able to do everything they want. I want more people doing cool stuff because they have the ability to, rather than being restricted by their lack of overall health, or injury.
I truly believe that being physically active in any way that you enjoy makes your life better in every other aspect, so I want people able to do those activities! Movement is medicine.
