Meet Mohamed Aburass of Sarra’s Charity Organization

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mohamed Aburass.

Hi Mohamed, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Sarra’s Charity was founded in 2021 in memory of our daughter/sister/wife/mother/friend, Sarra Abuanga, who tragically passed away from a pulmonary embolism while eight months pregnant with her son. Sarra had a giving heart and a deep commitment to helping vulnerable families, specifically mothers with newborns in our hometown Kadugli, South Kordufan in Sudan, donating where she donated monthly to those in need. After her passing, our family was determined to honor her spirit by continuing the acts of kindness she embodied.
It all began with a small act of charity: Sarra’s uncle, Essam Musa Bringi, used extra funds from her memorial event to purchase medicine for a sick child in Kadugli, South Kordofan. After informing Sarra’s father, Mohamed Aburass, he encouraged him to continue similar acts of charity in Sarra’s memory — and with that, the mission and vision of Sarra’s Charity were born.
We started with small projects, such as providing food, clothing, and essential healthcare to those in need. As peoples needs grew, so did our vision/mission to strive and continue helping others. In 2022, we established a sister organization in Kansas to help financially support the growing humanitarian work in Sudan. Despite the struggles Sudan has faced for so many years and even today, we are determined to do what we can to help. Today, Sarra’s Charity continues to serve families impacted by poverty and conflict, offering health services, educational support, food programs, and emergency relief — keeping Sarra’s legacy of compassion alive.
Sarra leaves behind her beautiful daughter, Ranwa, who is a constant reminder of her mother’s love and strength. She is also survived by her loving husband, devoted parents, siblings, and extended family — all of whom carry her spirit forward through this charity. Each act of service, each donation, and each life touched by Sarra’s Charity is a testament to the powerful legacy she left behind.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Operating in a conflict zone like South Kordofan comes with major challenges: ongoing instability, lack of infrastructure, displacement of communities, and safety risks. Many nonprofits have been forced to shut down, but through perseverance, creativity, and prayer, we have found ways to continue serving those most in need.
One of the greatest difficulties has been communication. Due to conflict-related power outages and limited access to internet or phone services, staying connected with our teams on the ground has been difficult. Yet, through the dedication of our volunteers and strategic planning, we’ve continued to carry out vital programs.

Another challenge is resource availability. With the war disrupting supply chains, basic items such as food, medicine, and educational materials has become harder to source locally. We plan to ship much-needed supplies — including medical kits, hygiene packs, school materials, and solar-powered tools — once it becomes safe to do so.
In the U.S., raising awareness for a region often overlooked by mainstream media has been another obstacle. Many people are unfamiliar with the specific hardships facing families in South Kordofan and Sudan in general. Still, through community outreach, storytelling, and partnering with like-minded organizations, we are gradually expanding our network of support and solidarity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sarra’s Charity focuses on improving the well-being of at-risk pregnant women, infants, children, and displaced families in Sudan. Our core areas of work include:

• Healthcare Assistance: Providing medication, maternal health support, health and hygiene products, and emergency healthcare for vulnerable families.
• Food and Nutrition: Distributing food baskets, hosting community meals, and delivering emergency food aid during crises.
• Educational Support: Supplying school uniforms, materials, and tuition assistance for orphans and children in impoverished areas.
• Emergency Response: Offering shelter materials, clothes, and immediate relief for families displaced by conflict.
• Volunteer Training: Educating local volunteers through weekly sessions about the importance of humanitarian work, the role of media in social awareness, and leadership skills in charity management.

Our volunteers in Sudan are truly the heartbeat of the organization, dedicating countless selfless hours despite difficult conditions. Their efforts were especially visible during our 2022 Impact Year, where we delivered meals to hospitals, distributed food packs during Ramadan, and organized educational seminars for children and youth.
In the U.S., we continue to build awareness through educational events, community fundraisers, and social media outreach. We are proud to have expanded our donor base, hosted local events like charity iftars during Ramadan, and plan to focus more heavily this year on child-centered initiatives — including school supply drives, health education events, and creating programs that connect American youth with global causes.

What sets Sarra’s Charity apart is the personal connection we bring to our mission. Every project is carried out with deep cultural understanding, respect for the communities we serve, and heartfelt sincerity — making our impact feel like an extension of the community itself rather than outside aid.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The biggest lesson we’ve learned is that small acts of kindness, when done consistently and sincerely, can create a ripple effect of hope and change to someone who is in dire need. A simple meal, a school uniform, or a bottle of life-saving medication can restore dignity and joy to a family who lost hope and feels forgotten.

We’ve also learned that resilience comes not from having unlimited resources, but from commitment — from showing up again and again, even when the situation seems impossible.

Another profound lesson is the power of unity. When we hold each other’s hands and work together, we can overcome unimaginable obstacles and build something beautiful out of pain.

At Sarra’s Charity, we are deeply rooted in the concept of Sadaqah Jariyah — a “flowing charity” that continues to benefit people long after the giver has passed. Our mission is more than just charity; it’s about creating a living legacy for Sarra and fostering a culture of compassion that will endure for generations to come.
