Meet Jessica Schifman of Leawood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Schifman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dad and I started our Red Light Therapy business in December of 2020. We had worked together before and knew we wanted to collaborate on something again, but it took us a while to figure out exactly what that would be. When I started using red light therapy myself and experienced such incredible benefits, I knew this was the direction we wanted to pursue.

About a year after launching our Red Light Therapy business, I became fascinated with Permanent Jewelry. Since we had some extra space in our therapy center, I decided to add that service as well, ForeverLinked KC. Both businesses flourished, and a year later, my sister and I partnered to open a psychological services business, Grow Psychological, in the building next door.

I absolutely love the process of figuring out operations and understanding how businesses work. My dad, on the other hand, excels at managing finances. Together, we make an excellent team, blending strategy with a willingness to explore new ideas. Our journey has been a rewarding mix of hard work, creativity, and collaboration.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been incredibly fortunate that my journey hasn’t been filled with insurmountable challenges, but I’ve certainly made some missteps along the way. Those missteps, though minor, have been invaluable learning opportunities, helping me discern what is truly necessary and what is not worth my time. As a business owner, it often feels like everyone is trying to sell you something, and I’ve come to value my time deeply, choosing to focus on what truly matters.

We started small and on a tight budget. My dad and I didn’t pay ourselves during the first year, pouring countless hours into the business. With dedication—and a bit of luck—we eventually reached profitability. Whenever we had extra cash, we reinvested it into developing new revenue streams. We built everything from scratch, relying on our efforts rather than outsourcing, except for some strategic help with SEO and Google Ads.

Our growth has been entirely organic—slow but steady. As the business expanded, so did my team. Having the right people in place to manage the many moving parts has made all the difference. Their support has allowed me to create a schedule that is less stressful and much more enjoyable, making the journey all the more rewarding.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Overseeing a few different types of businesses, the number one common thread between them is exceptional service. Taking care of people is fundamental to everything we do. Whether it’s our therapists, service providers, administrators, or clients, the focus remains on making people feel welcome. This means providing a clean, comfortable environment and ensuring every interaction is a positive experience. Our goal is to exceed expectations at every level, creating an atmosphere where people feel valued and cared for. I think this makes a difference in the quality of people we have working with us. We are so lucky to have our people. If we support our people, our clients feel it, and it makes a difference in the outcome of the services we are providing.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Growing up with three little sisters was pure magic. We spent a lot of time outside, especially in our front yard. The driveway became our dance studio, where we’d blast a Janet Jackson tape from our shared pink boombox. We’d choreograph dance routines and make my little sister be the top of pyramids. We’d also walk to a nearby 7-Eleven to treat ourselves to slushies and Slim Jim’s.
