Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Kulikov.
Sam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From the moment I graduated in 2018, I was determined to forge my own path, one I had set in motion when I chose to major in Entrepreneurship at UMKC’s Bloch School. Driven by a sense of responsibility to turn my passion into something real, I took the leap and founded Social Apex Media. My vision was clear: to create a marketing agency that truly bridges the gap between brands and the modern consumer. I leaned into a community-first approach that has enabled us to scale rapidly, serving clients ranging from Starbucks and Sporting KC to impactful non-profits like the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Boys & Girls Club.
A few years later, I helped launch the Kansas City Pioneers, our city’s own esports team. What began as a bold idea has grown into one of North America’s fastest-growing esports, gaming, and lifestyle brands. We’ve raised over $1.7 million, competed globally, and built a team that regularly qualifies for world championship playoffs across multiple games. As Chief Marketing Officer, I built our global marketing and creative team from the ground up and secured partnerships with major brands such as QuikTrip, DoorDash, and Logitech – driving more than $3 million in revenue. For me, entrepreneurship isn’t just about success or the drive to win; it’s about sharing those wins with the people and community that made them possible, and continually finding new ways to create impact through innovation, collaboration, and authentic engagement.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a business, in any industry, comes with a fair share of challenges. Launching two simultaneously is a whole different ballgame. When we launched Social Apex, we faced the initial hurdle of building credibility in a rapidly evolving digital marketing landscape right after college. The agency had to adapt quickly during COVID-19, which led us to pivot and explore new opportunities in the gaming space.
In the gaming sector specifically, we discovered that content often sits behind what I call a “velvet rope” – it’s fragmented, device-locked, and can feel exclusive to outsiders. Breaking through these barriers while maintaining authenticity has required constant innovation and adaptation of our strategies.
Building and scaling a team also presented its own set of challenges. We’ve had to carefully balance rapid growth with maintaining quality, ensuring clear guidance and support as new team members integrate into our operations. Managing multiple ongoing projects, meeting tight deadlines, and coordinating between creative teams requires robust systems and constant communication.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Social Apex Media?
At Social Apex Media, we’ve distinguished ourselves as a dynamic marketing agency that bridges the gap between traditional marketing wisdom and modern digital innovation. Our specialty lies in creating authentic, community-driven campaigns that resonate deeply with today’s consumers. What sets us apart is our unique blend of strategy and creative storytelling, allowing us to serve diverse clients from major brands across a variety of industries from CPG to Sports and Entertainment.
One of our proudest achievements has been our ability to adapt and innovate in rapidly evolving markets. Our work with the Kansas City Pioneers exemplifies this – we’ve helped transform it into one of North America’s fastest-growing esports and lifestyle brands, securing partnerships with major brands like QuikTrip, DoorDash, and Logitech.
Our brand stands for more than just marketing services; we’re committed to creating meaningful impact through innovation and authentic engagement. Whether it’s developing viral marketing campaigns, crafting comprehensive brand strategies, or pioneering new approaches in the gaming and esports space, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of digital marketing evolution while maintaining strong community connections.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I am particularly excited about several key opportunities and initiatives. First, I see tremendous potential in expanding our esports and gaming division, especially as we witness the industry’s “Netflix moment” where accessibility and mainstream appeal are rapidly increasing. We’re actively developing innovative approaches to make gaming content more accessible to broader audiences while maintaining its core authenticity.
Additionally, I’m focused on scaling Social Apex’s operations to serve larger clients while maintaining our boutique, high-touch approach that has been crucial to our success. This includes investing in emerging technologies and building specialized teams dedicated to areas like AI-driven marketing strategies and immersive brand experiences.
On the community front, I’m passionate about expanding our impact through strategic partnerships with regional organizations and educational institutions. We’re developing programs to mentor the next generation of marketing professionals and entrepreneurs, helping bridge the gap between traditional education and real-world industry demands.
These future directions all align with my core mission: pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the new age of culture and marketing while creating meaningful impact in our community. The landscape is evolving rapidly, and I’m committed to ensuring we’re not just keeping pace but setting new standards for innovation and excellence.
