Rising Stars: Meet Ben Lee of Kansas City, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Lee.

Ben , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Creating stories through comic books has always been a dream of mine since I was a kid. In recent years, created Big Head Productions to make that dream a reality. Recently relaunched Big Head Productions in 2022 and have been redoubling my efforts to build this passion into a sustainable, creative business. A business that not only will support me, but hopefully other aspiring creators.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth journey to be sure. The immediate hurdle has been marketing and building brand awareness. Reaching the Target Audience for my work has definitely been a challenge. Another hurdle has been operating capital. Other businesses successful in this space often talk about having a ‘day job’ while pursing their passion. Unfortunately hit a blockhead in that regard in 2023, and finding ways to rebound has been challenging.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work since I could hold a pencil has been fueled by a love of pop-culture, be it comics, animation, movies and more. At 46, I found few things that could move a person more than pop culture. The range of emotions it inspires is a powerful thing & being inspired by it since I was a kid, it’s the inevitable direction my art has taken, and I’ve never looked back.

At the heart of each piece, a love of pop-culture is at its core. Just the sheer joy and escapism I’ve had through comics, anime, manga and more since I was kid, and carry with me to this day, has definitely influenced my work. And I definitely think it shows. Without a doubt it’s my hope that the work will provide a joyful escape to anyone to who may view it.

With my work, I hope it makes people smile, thinking of that moment in a story that really grabbed them, and took them on a journey. I just look to make people smile.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Having a big heart and all that encompasses.
