Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Cahill.
Hi Ian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been working as a part-time novelist for over 12 years. When my first daughter was born, I was looking for an identity outside of just “Dad.” I always wanted to be a writer and took creative writing classes in college but never seemed to form the community or consistency to write an entire book. Through social media, I quickly found a community and support to help me finish my first book in 2016. From there, I have written nine novels, some of which are still unpublished.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. I have had to manage work/life balance a lot. Since I started writing, I have maintained a full-time job as a director of innovation for a marketing company. I also have added two more kids to the mix, so life can be hectic. I find myself writing in the cracks of the day or very late at night, which presents challenges.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
To date, I have published 3 novels. My debut, ‘Twelve and a Half Hearts’ has been nominated for a Thorpe Menn Literary Excellence Award and has been recognized as a featured work in a few other contests. My second novel, ‘No Such Luck’ has made its way into many book club readings, and I have had the unique experience of speaking at some of them and encouraging budding writers.
To this point, I have spoken to youth groups and classrooms about my writing habits and how to structure a novel, and very much enjoy co-hosting workshops and classes centered on getting people prepared to write their first novel!
What does success mean to you?
As a writer, success isn’t always something tangible. Often my inspiration comes from odd places, and just getting those thoughts down on paper is a win. Getting a chance to write and share my stories is a win. If the day comes when I can spend all day writing novels, that would be amazing, but for me at this point in my life, just putting something out for readers to consume is something that I count as the ultimate success.
