Today we’d like to introduce you to Project Restart.
Hi Project, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The four founders of Project Restart are two pairs of sisters. We wanted to create a safe space for dancers of varying dance experience levels to come together and feel comfortable and welcomed. Our name stems from a dream of ours to collaborate with other dancers outside our group, and to treat each performance “project” as a “restart”. We do not hold auditions, but rather add members that are friends of current members in hopes of continuing to foster a loving, familial environment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our biggest struggle has been finding practice times that work for everyone. A few of our members live in other cities or are at different stages in their life that makes it difficult for them to meet up for practice and participate in performances. There are also times when we are given very short notice for a performance opportunity and must scramble to prepare dances with little practice. It can also be difficult to come to an agreement on song choices and performance outfits due to differing opinions.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Project Restart is a dance cover team that mainly focuses on K-POP and J-POP dances, and specializes in live performances. We’ve performed at anime conventions (Naka-Kon in Overland Park, KS), cultural festivals (KC Arirang Korean Cultural Festival in Kansas City, MO), and other related events (K-Friends Adaptive Sports Festival in Overland Park, KS). We are best known for our unique stage outfit concepts. We are most proud of the lifelong friendships we’ve created through this group. What sets us apart from others is the strong focus we have on creating positive connections with others within the KC dance community.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Our ability to adapt has been the greatest key to our continuing success. Adapting to our various concepts, as well as any mishaps that might happen before or during a performance, and preparing dances with very few practices. One of our other greatest strengths has been our ability to take everyone’s differences and properly utilize them in a celebratory fashion. Some members are strong dancers or performers, while others excel at styling or crafting, and others are amazing at graphic design, sound production and social media management. We have worked hard to highlight all these different strengths, and that has been a huge factor in our success.
