Community Highlights: Meet Crystal Reckker of Spectrum Navigation, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Reckker.

Hi Crystal, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a licensed Master Level Social Worker with over 13 years of experience working with children and families. Over the last 2 years I have also become a certified autism specialist, individual therapist for caregivers of kids with autism and children with autism as well as a business owner for a caregiver support business, Spectrum Navigation, LLC.

More importantly than all of these, though, I am a mother to 3 beautiful children, all of whom are on the Autism Spectrum. When my stepson was 8, he received his ASD diagnosis. This was the first moment I started learning how he learns best. Fast forward 4 years later and I not only had another child diagnosed with ASD but TWO (at ages 18 months and 2.5) The word overwhelmed didn’t begin to explain what I felt.

Over the next few years, I grew unbelievably frustrated trying to understand what my children needed. It felt like I was constantly jumping through hoops, just to get the bare minimum of clarity. That frustration led me to start my company — to give families a clear starting point. A place where they can begin to find support, know they’re not alone, and most importantly, realize that their child is no different than before the diagnosis. The only difference now is that they have the power to open the right doors to help their child thrive.

This year, My phenomenal best friend and owner of Thompson Counseling, gave Spectrum navigation a home. This location was perfect as caregiver support services are right in line with Thompson Counselings mission of caring for the whole family aspect of any mental health needs.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha, with 3 kids with special needs? Absolutely it;s been a bumpy ride HAHA. in order to continue to grow this company the way i liked, full time, i had to work full time (until 2am) elsewhere and then get this company up and running on the side for almost a whole year. Between the research of supports, connecting and networking with community providers and meeting with lawyers to make sure I’m doing this business thing correctly, the rides been wild for sure, and it’s just. Beginning!!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My desire to create Spectrum Navigation is to give parents this time. This moment in time that you have no idea what to do with. No idea what it means or where to go next. This moment to sit with your little, beautiful human, who you were just told will be a “different learner” for the rest of their life. This very impactful moment in time. This moment, to just feel every bit of feeling you have inside about this diagnosis and what it means in your family’s life.

While you are taking that time, I want to navigate the next steps for you. I want to help provide you with the knowledge of what having a “different learner” really means: Which is, they help us see the small moments in life are worth noticing and celebrating! That this new way of life will feel hard at times but because you invested in Spectrum Navigations services you will not have to walk through this alone.
