Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimmie Queen.
Hi Kimmie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first started working at record stores while in my early 20’s in the 1990’s. It was a heyday for CDs, The music industry was booming and many musical trends were in the spotlight.
I worked at Streetside Records (Indep. MO), Pennylane Records (Westport KC), 7th Heaven (on Troost Ave.)
I returned to working in record stores almost 10 years ago. I decided after over 30 years in retail I should open my own little record/vintage shop. Planet Queen Records has been open for a year and 3 months now. I’ve lived in KC for 30 years now but I was raised in Independence Mo. Growing up I always loved The Independence Square and thought it was missing a fun record shop so I opened it there.
My partner of 21 years, Cody Wyoming and I play in bands, and have done a lot of alternative and professional theatre in KC. We enjoy supporting live music including local bands and believe in supporting our KC area artist community. I’m a vinyl DJ, so I collect records of various genres. Cody and I also have a love of B-Movies, and genre films. We collect hard to find VHS and DVDs. Many of the films we sell at Planet Queen are from our own collection.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our biggest struggle has been simply getting the word out that We are there.
Every week people who live in the area walk in and say “how long have you been here? I didn’t know you were here!”
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Planet Queen Records & Vintage specializes in used media. Used records, cassettes, CDs, 8-Tracks, VHS, DVDs, Laserdisc’s. We do sell new Local music media.
We also sell used concert, band, film, pop culture t-shirts. Vintage clothing, band buttons, stickers, sunglasses and jewelry. We have fun collectibles, magazines and books. I think of it is a cute little shop you are going to get Past Blasted at.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Cody and I are Very into music and film. We aren’t simply business owners, we are sorta aficionados. That’s something I particularly love about some of the other local record stores as well. The “Lifers.”
I think that makes a record store a part of a community. We have in-store live music as well, which introduces local artists to the music buying public.
