Today we’d like to introduce you to Akira Gilmore.
Hi Akira, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my dance journey at a young age through varies styles such as praise dance, drill team, and hip hop. As I got into high school I started exploring a new dance styles which was majorette. I instantly fell in love and continued doing this from high school into college. After training in college for two years. I was given the opportunity to start coaching. Choreographing, and teaching dance classes. The transition from college to home was a little rocky as it was hard to find my passion for dance again. To overcome this I then began teaching my own freelance heels classes and was able to connect with so many dancers in the area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have overcame a lot of challenges such as moments where I have lost my passion, felt like an outsider, felt like I wasn’t good enough. In the end I always come back to dance because it is my safe space where I can express myself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a choreographer/Dance Teacher.
I specialize in teaching heel classes however I am skilled in other styles such as hip hop, majorette, and praise dance.
I am most proud of how I have been able to network, bring other dancers together, and being able to create a safe space where ladies can freely be comfortable and confident to find and show their sexier side in my classes while also uplifting each other. I believe that is what sets me apart from others along with the genuineness and creativity I bring to the choreography.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those who are just starting out I would say it’s ok to be nervous or anxious but do it anyway take the class or take that leap of faith and don’t over stress because in the end as long as you have fun and learned something from the experience that’s all that matters. I would also say don’t be afraid to make new connections, meet new people, and show love and support because they will return the favor and so many good things can come from it.
