Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Martinez
Hi Melanie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I was young, I’ve always been drawn to photography and admired the work of photographers. I found myself fascinated by how they could capture moments and tell stories through images. However, as I got older and started a family, I didn’t have the means to pursue photography right away. But the passion never really left me. Eventually, I was able to invest in a camera, and as I started practicing, I immediately fell in love with it. What really resonated with me was the ability to work with individuals and families, capturing those special moments that hold so much meaning.
Recently, I discovered a niche that really excites me—photographing live music. As a musician myself, this has been a fantastic way to merge my love for music with my passion for photography. It feels like the perfect blend of two things I deeply care about. Now, I’m focusing on expanding that niche while continuing to work with people and families to capture the important moments in their lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. In the beginning, juggling two children and a part-time job made it really challenging to find time for everything beyond just taking photos — editing, scheduling appointments, managing clients, and all the behind-the-scenes work. At first, I underestimated how much time it would all require. But I soon realized that if I wanted to make it work, I had to treat it like any other career. So, I started setting aside dedicated time for practice, editing, and running the business, just like I would if I were clocking into a traditional job. Thankfully, I’ve had a lot of support from my husband and family, which has made all the difference.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a candid photographer, and I specialize in capturing genuine moments. What sets me apart is my approach — I don’t just aim for a technically perfect photo; I want to tell a story. Before every shoot, I take the time to get to know my clients— their interests, personalities, and what makes them light up. This connection helps me create a space where people can relax and be themselves, which is key, especially when clients come in feeling a little nervous or unsure in front of the camera.
Some of my proudest moments aren’t necessarily big, flashy projects, but the personal impact my photos have. It brings me so much joy when someone changes their profile picture to one of my shots or sends me a picture of my portrait hanging proudly on their wall. That’s when I know I’ve done something meaningful — not just for me as a photographer, but for them as well.
How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure if I’d call it luck, but I’ve definitely experienced a lot of fortune along the way. In the beginning, I was fortunate to have friends and family who supported me and gave me the opportunity to practice and grow as a photographer. That early encouragement made a big difference. Later on, I was also lucky to work with wonderful clients who not only trusted me with their photos but also promoted my work, referred me to others, and came back as returning clients. Their support has played a huge role in helping me build my business and continue doing what I love
