Life & Work with Kristen Koerber of Kansas City, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Koerber

Hi Kristen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a real estate attorney, but outside of work, food and recipe development have always been my creative outlets. Cooking, experimenting with new recipes, and sharing my love for food with family and friends has been something I’ve naturally gravitated toward. Content creation started as a fun way to document what I was making in my kitchen on a tight law school grocery budget, but over time, it’s grown into a true passion project. Being both a lawyer and a food content creator is the best of both worlds for me. I genuinely love getting to do both, and I feel so grateful that this is my life. Practicing law and creating food content bring me joy in completely different ways. My legal career challenges me intellectually, while food content creation is my creative escape where I get to experiment, share, and have fun.

My love for cooking started in the kitchen with my mom and grandma, where we’d spend time together making meals, experimenting with recipes, and sharing our favorite flavors. Those moments weren’t just about the food, they were about connection, creativity, and the joy of creating an amazing dish for your loved ones. At the same time, I developed a love for dining out with my dad, where we’d geek out over restaurant menus, analyzing every dish together and debating what to order before we even stepped foot in the restaurant. Those experiences shaped the way I think about food, not just as something to eat, but as an experience to savor, explore, and share.

I chose the name Normal Food because that’s exactly what I love: simple, delicious meals that are easy to make and enjoy. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated to be great, and I’ve always been drawn to dishes that feel effortless but still satisfying. Normal Food is about celebrating that idea with recipes that are approachable, repeatable, and genuinely enjoyable. It’s more than just a name because it reflects how I cook, how I eat, and how I share my love for food in an unserious way that still feels fun and real.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I know that everyone faces challenges in their career and creative work, but I feel grateful that I don’t feel like I have any major obstacles worth complaining about right now. I’m lucky to do work I enjoy, both in my legal career and in food content creation. That said, balancing the two can be a challenge, and I will always prioritize being a lawyer over my little cooking video hobby. There are only so many hours in the day, and it’s easy to feel stretched thin some days. But at the end of the day, I chose both paths because I love them, so any challenges that come with them are just part of the process. I try to focus on showing up consistently and making small improvements over time, rather than worrying too much about what’s hard.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Honestly, I don’t think that I’m any different or more special than any other food content creator. My only goal is for someone to stumble across one of my recipe videos and have their week feel just a bit easier or better because of it. Maybe they find a new pasta recipe that becomes a part of their family’s weeknight rotation, or they finally feel confident cooking on stainless steel after I showed them that turning the heat down is the key. If even one person feels inspired to cook at home or simplify their meals, that’s a win for me. I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel, or use ingredients that will break a budget, I’m just trying to make good, normal food (see what I did there? ha) that helps people enjoy their time in the kitchen a little bit more.
