Meet Danielle Anderson of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Anderson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was involved in music as a kid, and had great support from my family, but I got into writing my own songs and having the guts to perform them while I was in college in Fort Collins, CO. I started performing music as a hobby, but it took over my other interests and pursuits. In 2009, I quit my (not very impressive) day job to pursue being a songwriter and performer full time. One of the big moments of my career was having a video featured on the YouTube homepage in late 2008. This created the opportunity to be seen and heard by people all over the world, many of whom are still my fans. Since then, I’ve put up over 300 Youtube videos, toured the US, become a teacher, expanded my love of performance into comedy, and I’ve released 8 albums. My newest album, Fumbling, comes out on March 21st, 2025.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an artist is never a smooth ride. You’re basically committing to sit on a rollercoaster for the rest of your life. The bright side is the more you do it, it gets more comfortable to be uncomfortable. In a lot of ways I’ve been my biggest obstacle. I’ve realized the importance of checking in with myself to make sure I connect to the work and am doing what feels right as an artist, not just what’s easy or safe. In 2018, I moved from Colorado to Kansas City, MO, to take a break from the intensity of my music career and explore the possibility of a new life. I had big personal losses during that time, losing my grandma and my dad. After the big move and intended break from music, came the pandemic, so I had a 4-5 year hiatus, and came out of it with feeling quite shaken and unsure of what was next.

Thankfully, songs, art, and performance are my way to process this stuff. My new album is about all of it, the move to Kansas City, the losses, the stories of my family, and the title track, Fumbling, is about who I’m trying to be after everything I’ve been through. Hoping, but knowing it probably isn’t going to get any easier. The chorus of the song is, “Everything is wild. Everything is fine. Everything is moving along just as it oughta be, and it’s a heartbroken, lonely kind of wandering to be so elegant in all of my fumbling.” The song and album is really for anyone, artist or not, as we work through the rollercoaster of life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an artist! I write and perform under the stage name Danielle Ate the Sandwich. As a songwriter, I write songs about grief, family dynamics, and what it is to be a human. I play ukulele and guitar. As a performer, I love to connect with an audience through shared experiences, storytelling, laughter and tears. I create comedy characters and perform music and stories from their perspective. I’m a very proud small business owner. I manage my arts career, produce events and projects, and hire other artists to work with me to make cool stuff. I aim for authenticity, vulnerability and humor in everything I do.
