Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Dawkins
Hi Amber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been behind the camera since 2007, but the focus of my photography has shifted over the years. What started as a mother-daughter hobby capturing family and senior portraits on the weekends eventually turned into a full time career as a branding photographer.
In 2016, I decided to specialize in branding photography, and that’s when my business really took off. It started with photographing headshots of business owners for features in local magazines. Those clients often called back after seeing the results of our sessions, wanting more in-depth photoshoots to showcase their whole story – from staff headshots to architectural photos of their spaces to action shots of them providing services to their clients.
Now, I’m busier than I’ve ever been. I’m proud of my extensive client list and the awards my photos have won, and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I truly have been blessed with a pretty smooth road and steady growth. Learning to price my photos at a competitive rate that doesn’t undermine their value in marketing was a challenge that involved a lot of research and a few leaps of faith. It’s still an ever evolving process.
As you know, we’re big fans of Amber Dawkins Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in creating photos for small businesses to use in their marketing. Whether these photos will end up featured in magazines, used for building websites, shared on socials, or displayed on billboards, my goal is to create a set of images that tell my client’s whole story to their potential customers. This includes a variety of types of photography, from lifestyle headshots to photos of storefronts and office spaces to staged “action shots” of services being provided.
I think what sets me apart is my experience with both portrait work and architectural/design photography. Lighting and shooting techniques are very different in these two types of photography, and therefore it can be hard to find a photographer that is confident in both areas. I’m proud to be a one-stop shop for my clients.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I think the main thing I learned business-wise through the Covid-19 Crisis is that having good client relationships is one of the single most impactful factors in a small business’ longterm success. It was scary to press pause on everything I’d worked for, wondering which clients might not come back when the world returned to normal. Thankfully, my relationships with my clients were strong enough to survive the shutdowns, and when business resumed, they were right there, waiting and ready to book new photoshoots.
