Conversations with Brittany Dayton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Dayton

Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Glitz by Brit Design and Decor almost 10 years ago out of stress. I had been in corporate America for 2 years and found myself needing a stress outlet. A friend of mine at the time knew how creative I was and asked me to decorate her baby shower. She mentioned she would take care of all the expenses but just needed help executing and creatively thinking of the design. This is what jump started Glitz by Brit. Her baby shower turned out so beautiful that everyone around me mentioned I needed to do this professionally.

Over a decade of events I have tried to elevate my style and design with the time and with the trends to best serve the customers.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur there are always ups and downs. Event decor and design is a luxury that people can not always afford. Before covid we battled with finding the clientel who wanted to have an elevated event with the budget to match. I often found myself spending money out of my own pocket because I wanted an event to have a certain look. That often killed any profit I was hoping to make.

Then when covid hit, Glitz by Brit was also hit because all events were canceled due to not being able to have large amount of people gather. Clients were also faced with job loss and wanted to cut out those luxury add ons.

There have been times where I am filled with tears from exhaustion and wanting to quit but I have pressed forward because I remember I am responsible for making someone’s big day perfect for their memories.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of my ability to multi task successfully running multiple businesses while maintaining a full time corporate job. I am a Senior Sales Executive at a large Healthcare IT company as well as the owner and lead designer of Glitz by Brit. Additionally, I owned and operated an event space for three years, gaining valuable experience in business management and event planing.

On top of all of this I am involved in several service organizations, lead an events team for my church, own properties as a landlord all while also pursuing a dual masters.

I think what sets me apart from others is my reason why. My biggest pleasure is making others feel good about themselves and their special day. Whether it be a bride’s smile, an expecting mother’s tears of joy or a little boy’s excitement for his birthday party I am filled with so much joy being apart of life long memories.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One of my favorite quotes from oprah is ” A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself”. As an entreprenuer there are times where you want to quit, give up and walk away, this is where the mentors and the people you surround yourself are important.
The right people in your corner will not allow you to give up on yourself or the gifts you have been blessed with.

In my business networking is my biggest marketing tool. Although social media has been an amazing tool to use, most of my net new business is from word of mouth. Networking with new people in the community, networking with people at the events I have put on and having my current clients refer me has allowed my business to continue to grow!
