Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea DeLong.

Andrea DeLong

Hi Andrea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Photography has always been more than just an interest—it’s been a calling, an unshakable force woven into the fabric of my life. In high school, I spent countless afternoons transforming my friends into models, orchestrating impromptu photoshoots with nothing more than a cheap camera, natural light, and an insatiable desire to create. The thrill of capturing raw, unscripted emotion, of playing with shadows and angles, of seeing an idea materialize in a photograph—it all fascinated me.

But my relationship with photography wasn’t confined to being behind the lens. My years as a model offered a different perspective, one that shaped the way I work with my clients today. I experienced firsthand what it feels like to be the subject of a photograph—the vulnerability, the self-consciousness, the desire to look and feel incredible. I learned how subtle shifts in posture could transform an image, how confidence radiates through the eyes, how the right guidance can make all the difference. That knowledge became my secret weapon. Now, when I direct a shoot, I don’t just tell my clients how to pose—I show them, encourage them, guide them into movements that feel effortless and authentic. The result? Stunning, confident images that reflect the very best version of themselves.

My pivotal moment came in college when I realized this passion didn’t have to stay a hobby—it could be my life’s work. Attending Brooks Institute of Photography turned that dream into reality. I immersed myself in the technical and artistic intricacies of the craft, refining my ability to manipulate light, compose striking images, and tell compelling visual stories. Every click of the shutter is more than just a photograph; it’s a celebration of strength, beauty, and confidence. From those early high school photoshoots to the deeply personal portraits I create now, photography has always been my way of connecting, empowering, and capturing the essence of a moment.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a solo entrepreneur is both rewarding and challenging. While I excel in artistry, color theory, and composition, I may not possess the same strengths in accounting or administrative tasks. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that when you run a small business alone, you wear many hats—you are the creative visionary, the leader, the salesperson, the accountant, the project manager, and everything in between. The need to master multiple aspects of business can feel overwhelming at times, but those moments when I am deeply immersed in my craft, connected with my clients, and living out my dream make it all worthwhile.

Running a small business, especially one that operates on a gig-based model, also comes with financial challenges. Unlike traditional employment, there are no corporate benefits, discounted health insurance plans, or employer contributions to a 401(k)—every financial responsibility falls on my shoulders. Photography is an expensive profession, requiring significant investment in equipment, software, and overhead costs, all while covering personal financial obligations without the security of a steady paycheck. To maintain the same income I once had in the corporate world, I need to generate nearly double the revenue due to these additional expenses.

Another challenge is the absence of traditional time off. For the first 12 years of my career as a full-time photographer, I shot weddings every weekend. This made it difficult to maintain friendships with those who had 9-to-5 jobs, as I was rarely available when they gathered. Over time, this created a sense of loneliness—I often felt like an observer of others’ joy rather than a participant in my own. However, I eventually found a sense of belonging by forming friendships with fellow creatives who shared similar schedules. Work dates, collaborations, and intentional time for personal experiences allowed me to find balance between capturing memories for others and creating my own.

Being an artist is undeniably challenging, but pursuing what I love and what I believe I was meant to do is deeply fulfilling. Over time, I have honed the necessary skills, established boundaries to protect my time, and built meaningful relationships within my industry. The journey has not been easy, but it has been worth every step.
