Today we’d like to introduce you to Spaceman
Hi Spaceman, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Yo, good question.
I started making music at my mom’s rental house in Lawrence, KS when I was 13. I was always kind of on my own making chill RnB, and nobody really listened at the time. Eventually, I was gifted a better set up and moved into the KC Metro Area with my dad. I got into more Hip-Hop influenced sounds with my first album “Lonely Spaceman XXIII” along with a standalone single “Phantom” before taking around a year-long hiatus. During this time I was struggling with school and dealing with mental shit. I had been cooking up some beats and verses during this time, transitioning into rap because I decided I wanted to do something different. I wanted to get more lyrical, and give myself a challenge with something I hadn’t tried before. Eventually I started meeting up with my homeboy NYTRU$ (Wyatt) who liked my sound and started producing with me. I started to get better after I met my current girl, Aero, and I eventually released a few diss records which did well, got a few artists in the area to raise some eyebrows I guess.
Right now I’m at a high point. I did a collaboration with LA-artist Kyle Rapps on my record “IN GOD WE TRUST”, which is at about 5 thousand streams right now on Spotify, and with that came about 2,000 monthly listeners. I have never seen this much motion in my music and am glad to finally see it recognized.
Word.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Hell yeah, man. I struggle with some mental health issues, I get a lot of hate for being white-passing, though I was always told to embrace my identity as a black American and take pride in it by my family. It was never really an issue for me until I got older and moved to a less inclusive area. I don’t pay mind to all that though, I grew up with a family of people with all different skin colors, all black. We never felt the need to see each other as anything but human.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am, I guess, a very honest musician. I’ve never lied or misled in my lyrics, and I only speak on what I’ve seen and experienced. My sound is different, listen to my music, even if you don’t like it…it’s different. I’ve listened to HipHop since I was young. Grew up with Kanye, 2pac, Weezy, Kendrick, Kid Cudi, so those are my biggest influences right now as I consider myself more Hip-Hop than RnB. But many styles still shine through in my records. My mom is a jazz singer in KC, Vanessa Thomas, so I’ve been on jazz since I was a kid too. You’ll hear it in all my music, I have two mixtapes on the way that will blow everyone away. I think Spaceman describes my music in a way. Trippy, vibey, kinda unique, something you wouldn’t hear on this planet. That’s what I am going for. I had that nickname since I was a jit, like 3rd Grade. My music can go in many different directions. I’ll drop a retro Hip-Hop track [check out “Black Mamba”] or I’ll feature my boy YD on a harsh, trap-based track [check out “Bla Bla”]. As I grow my following you will see how I build my sound. I hope it’s not too predictable though.
What’s next?
My two upcoming mixtapes. “My honest unfiltered opinion”, a short EP with some tracks I compiled to introduce people to the main attraction, “Midwest Mixtape”. I can’t describe the anticipation I am feeling on both, but me and NYTRU$ personally think the latter will shoot us up to another level. Maybe we will get to really legitimize his label start-up, Vanguard Records. We have three artists: him, me, and YD. We all have huge plans for our releases. Especially now with me gaining more traction in the industry and in the KC area I hope to propel the trio to new heights. Take my boys up with me, along with my beautiful girlfriend.
