Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Owens
Hi Alex, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, my Mom, Aunt & Grandmother were all Realtors in the Chicago suburbs so I was exposed to the Real Estate world at a young age. Times were so different in the 90’s and early 2000’s though. I remember going into the office with my Mom while she flipped through the listings book. Nothing was online yet! I was dragged to a lot of open houses. My parents were also always buying and selling and building for our family as well. I loved looking through blue prints with them and daydreaming about the final result, even as a child. I ended up graduating from The University of Missouri- Columbia with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and worked as a news producer locally in KC for a couple of years before transitioning into social media and email marketing just as that world was starting to take off. This is back when influencers were still called bloggers and they only made money from their own websites! After a couple of years my family encouraged me to get my license. I was in a job I didn’t love at the time and was still young and didn’t have kids yet, so I decided to take night classes after my day job. Once licensed I quite my job and jumped into real estate with two feet. My husband and I agreed we would give it a year. After that, if I was not making it work, I needed to find a new job because we only saved enough for me to be without steady income for that long. The first six months were rough, It was a much different market than it is today. I closed one deal the first six months but I was busting my butt. By a year in I had closed over a dozen deals. I continued to work hard, learn as much as I could and try to get better every day. Each deal teaches you something new. I am entering my 10th year in real estate now and and have seen lots of different market phases. It’s been a fun journey and I feel like I’m just getting started. Last year I was a part of 95 buyer and seller transactions. Personally, my life has had it’s own highs and lows over these years. I welcomed two beautiful children and was diagnosed with Invasive Breast Cancer at the age of 33 with a 3 and 1 year old at the time. That was one of the most challenging years of my life, and was the most successful of my career at the time as well. I am so blessed to now be Cancer free. I now try to do my part to give back to other breast cancer patients and survivors whenever possible, and to raise awareness about the importance of self breast exams, early detection and knowing your own personal risk with the help from a doctor by examining your family history.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think I put most of that in the last question box.
Every year brings different struggles. Early in my career the struggle was getting people to want to work with me. I was young and not as experienced yet. I learned a lot of lessons on each transaction I closed. Every difficult deal made me better and going into year 10 I have a A LOT of experience to pull from that makes me a better Realtor for my clients. I have seen so much in terms of homes, repairs, negotiations, market shifts, that help me with strategy for my buyers and sellers. It is not a one size fits all deal. I love to problem solve!
in January 2023 I received my Breast Cancer Diagnosis and that was my most challenging year yet. I was juggling a 3 and 1 year old at home, a bustling career and going through surgeries and treatment for cancer at the age of 33. With the help of my husband, my family & friends and my team I made it through with flying colors.
