Today we’d like to introduce you to Fannie Gibson
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi, my name is Fannie Gibson, and I own Fannie’s West African Cuisine. I started my culinary journey in 2009 from my apartment. At first, I cooked for friends and family, and they loved the food. Encouraged by their support, I created a business card and distributed it to every gas station, grocery store, and local business in the community to attract customers, and it worked!
People began contacting me for catering services while promoting my business on social media to build my brand and get my name out there. The community supported me, which motivated me to open my restaurant in 2018.
I have reached where I am today through faith and community support. Nothing makes sense to me if I’m not serving others. I truly enjoy what I do, and I couldn’t be more thankful to be where I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The restaurant industry is one of the most challenging fields, and my journey has certainly not been smooth. One of my biggest challenges has been finding good and efficient help. Managing everything on my own can be overwhelming. Additionally, I went through an abusive marriage from 2016 to 2019, which was one of the saddest periods of my life while trying to run my business. I’ve fought many silent battles, but I kept going by the grace of God. So, no, it has not been a smooth road.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Advice for Those Just Starting Out
If you have a passion for food, go for it! If I can do it, so can you. I recommend having a clear plan and writing everything down. Set weekly, monthly, and yearly goals. Remember to hire slowly and fire quickly. It’s important to conduct background checks on everyone you bring into your establishment. Pursue this path for the passion, and the rewards will come later. Never give up on yourself, even when things become complicated or quiet around you. Keep pushing forward, and you will succeed.
