Hidden Gems: Meet Angela Vandegrift of Blue Room Bodywork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Vandegrift

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I developed an early interest in health and anatomy while training for fitness competitions in high school. This practice in discipline was invaluable for life; however, the results felt shallow and the diet wreaked havoc on my body. This ultimately led me down a holistic path. After taking some business classes at Butler County Community College in my hometown of Wichita, I was still searching for my true passion. That search led me to the New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics, where I learned about Food & Herbs as Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Cranial Sacral Therapy. This experience was genuinely transformative and opened my eyes to the potential of natural approaches to health and inspired me to make healing and holistic wellness my life’s work.

I continue to seek out innovative ways to enhance my offerings for loved ones and clients. From studying Ashiatsu in Colorado—a barefoot massage technique that delivers deep pressure—to earning my BA in Psychology from WSU, everything I learn adds a unique layer to my services and reflects my commitment to continual growth.

Starting my own business in 2021 was an unexpected yet fulfilling adventure. When the spa I worked at during COVID was forced to close for health concerns, my phone started ringing with clients and friends in need of some TLC, and that’s when I became an entrepreneur. Running my own business has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and creativity, from marketing to managing property. Blue Room Bodywork is the flagship and heart of the business, while Blue Room, Inc. is the umbrella that continues to branch out in various directions, including marketing, real estate, and other ventures. Recently joining the International Trade Council, I remain open to exploring unique opportunities as I expand and evolve.

Today, I’m proud to say that my adventurous spirit and dedication to health have shaped a business that’s deeply personal and impactful. The journey continues, and I’m excited to explore even more innovative ways to support creativity and well-being.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, the struggle is in the juggle—trying to do a million things at once without dropping any balls. While working from home, I wanted to create a space that felt both professional and inviting. This led me to study real estate and property management, which eventually resulted in hosting on Airbnb and becoming an agent. Then, I realized I needed to learn marketing for my massage therapy business, which led to offering marketing services to other small businesses. Each step comes with its own challenges and opportunities. Learning and trying something new is the exciting part. But the juggling, I’m still working on.

Imposter syndrome persists. Acknowledging self-doubt and fear without letting them stop me has been crucial. Learning to bet on myself and trust myself have been the most rewarding lessons so far.

We’ve been impressed with Blue Room Bodywork, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Blue Room Bodywork, I specialize in offering personalized, high-quality massage therapy and bodywork that promotes increased healing, pain relief, and overall well-being. My focus is on recovery from surgery or injury, pain relief, and emotional/mental well-being. I tailor each session to the unique needs of the client, using traditional techniques and innovative approaches to address pain and stress. My specialty is craniosacral, which is great for headache/migraine, neck and shoulder tension relief. Ongoing learning and expanding services to continuously evolve and meet the needs of the community is a passion.

The thing I’m most proud of is that I’m still in business! Continuous change and growth comes with a lot of risk. Every step has pushed me to become more resilient and creative. The fact that I’ve navigated these ups and downs and continue to find new ways to provide value to clients and community is something I’m incredibly proud of!

Blue Room Bodywork is about exploring and improving your state of being to better connect with community. Here to rock the boat— bringing transformation that moves beyond the surface. What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Must have a sense of humor.
You are right, you might fail. But you might not.
