Today we’d like to introduce you to Christin Ortiz.
Hi Christin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
To be quite honest, my story in birth photography starts before I was even aware. There wasn’t one large defining event, but smaller moments the Lord has brought me through during my life. My mother was a doula while I was in high school, which lead me to birth both my kiddos in a stand alone birth center, unmedicated. My husband has been my biggest supporter and was the one who actually pushed me to quit my then job, become birth doula certified, and who purchased my camera equipment for me. Knowing that family is the heart of everything we do as a society, how important family is in our every day lives, how beautiful and perfect we are as a family unit but also as individuals is what has driven me to where I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not, we have moved states twice since I officially started almost 3 years ago. The birth community is pretty tight knit and it takes time for mother’s to trust someone who comes into their space, and rightfully so. In the beginning I wasn’t really sure why or what drew me to document families and birth, outside of the beautiful and powerful images you know? So it’s taken me some time to really understand the deeper meaning. To understand just how fearfully and wonderfully made each one of us are. How God is still doing miracles every day, and I see that through birth and through each family I have the blessing and honor of photographing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have the honor of specializing in birth & family photography and videography in the Kansas City area. My work is more on the documentary side meaning my focus is very much on the way families naturally are together. Getting those little moments of every day documented since that’s when most children develop their memories. It’s documenting the seemingly mundane to show the beauty that is in motherhood, fatherhood, and the family as a whole.
What does success mean to you?
Defining success has changed throughout these last few years. At first it started with wanting recognition. Other’s recognizing my work or my talent meant that I was successful. That’s not it though. Success for me is now wholly defined in how well I honor Christ, becoming more Christ like, more of a servant to those who surround me . Through supporting the mom’s who choose me to document their days for them. Honoring their family as a whole and each person individually. Every fingerprint is unique.
