Conversations with Monica Kagay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Kagay

Hi Monica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a mom of 8 (5 boys/3 girls, ages 24-8). My husband and I celebrated our 25th Wedding anniversary this year.

In September 2023 I decided to pursue my dream to become a Cosmetologist. My oldest daughter, Faye (18yrs) & I shared this journey together and graduated in June 2024.

We are working at a beautiful Salon in Southern Johnson County (Jo & Co Salon). I never dreamed that I would go to school with any of my kids, let alone work with them! We are enjoying learning each and every day how to build a successful business.

As time passes I realize how fulfilling my career is to me. I love helping my customers feel their best. If they leave my chair with a smile on their face, I know that I have made a difference.

The most important lesson that I’ve learned from this experience is that it is never too late to follow your dreams. My new career journey has just begun and I am so excited for what the future holds.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was a challenge to manage my competing roles as wife, mom, and student. I was fortunate to have a great support system through my husband and kids. They are my biggest cheerleaders!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I offer many services in Hair and Makeup.

Hair services include men, women, and children’s haircuts, Specialty Colors, and Blonding. I specialize in Hair Extensions of all types.

Makeup services include Wedding and Special Event makeovers as well as offering my services as an affiliate Artist of a high end makeup company.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think Positivity is so important. Keep moving forward, accept constructive criticism and learn from your mistakes. You will come out stronger in the end.
