Today we’d like to introduce you to King Amfo
Hi King , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Nana Amfo Sackey but I go by King Amfo. My brothers and I started the Alpha Gang brand back in our home country Ghana in 2016. It first started of with music and later branched into fashion because of the wave we had unintentionally created. The fashion picked up a lot and because of our diverse capabilities and interests. We were able to start media direction and production which lead to the creation of our podcast the CruiseLine Podcast. Alpha Gang is a hub as we like to call it. It includes fashion, lifestyle, curation of creative spaces and podcasting.
The journey is a fun one and determination, family and friends support, resilience, and not taking no for an answer is what has gotten us this far. Moving to the United States was definitely what boosted my creative skills. Due to my background in fashion and event curation, I became a content creator, just to show case a few of my personal works and creative journey. Brands seemed to like that and begun reaching to me to represent them in some shape or form. Social media has played a vital role in all this, and I am truly grateful for the position I find myself in today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has definitely not been a smooth one. Along the way we encountered various challenges especially in the fashion industry. There were times were production was not done well and clothes that were received by people were in very bad shape. This created unrest with us but with the support of our family and friends we were able to improve production. Putting up our seasonal fashion shows are also challenging especially during the planning process but these challenges are a part of our journey and so we embrace it and learn from all our mistakes.
With regards to podcasting, we are only a year old and continually face challenges especially with mass producing content every day for all the different social media platforms. We try our best to divide the labor based on our schedules to ensure that posts and episodes all come out on time.
As a content creator I’ll say that has been the smoothest of all my endeavors because I always capture and document in the moment. I am trying to show people the natural and raw state of creativity. One struggle that I did face when I first started was building a following. I had my target audience, yes, but I received different followers from different backgrounds and so I tried to cater to the needs of each group. This took a toll on me at the beginning. But then I told myself that I will produce the content I want to produce, and it will attract the people interested in that content.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently an aspiring architect. I am getting my masters in architecture and with all the endeavors I find myself in, it always adds to my creative skill to make me the best architect I can be. I aspire to specialize in urban and residential architect and I am open to learning more about the different fields.
People currently know me for alpha gang and the cruiseline podcast and are surprised when I tell them I am studying architecture.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to do multiple things at the same time. Thanks to great scheduling and hard work of course. I pride my self on quality over quantity and so if an endeavor cannot be produced at maximum quality, I drop it.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid-19 reminded me the importance of family and people. I have been so flooded with working on various crafts my whole life I feel I lost that sense and importance of family along the way. Covid was a reset button for me to sit back and reflect on that importance. Family really is the pillar and i am truly grateful for mine.
