Conversations with Emily Martin And Kayla Brooner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Martin And Kayla Brooner

Hi Emily and Kayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Kayla first entered Emily’s life on New Year’s Eve, dressed in a sparkly sequin dress. From then on we existed as friends of a friend, slowly entering each other’s orbits more and more at time went on. A two-year long Dungeons and Dragons campaign led to solo hangouts which, eventually, led to the realization that we both were weirdos obsessed with the dark and morbid. Remnants Paranormal Podcast was born during a late-night walk. Originally, we planned on only talking about local haunts, but soon our curiosity led us to investigate locations in person. Now we’re approaching two full years as podcasters and investigators. We’ve found a niche in the wacky, weird world that is the Kansas City paranormal scene and can’t wait to explore it further.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a pair of young, working adults, finding the time to fully invest in a side project has been a challenge. Between parenting on Emily’s side and the occasional trip to Europe on Kayla’s, we have a lot to work around. Aside from that, neither of us are exactly tech wizards. In two years, we’ve blown through: three microphones, one soundboard, a handful of editing programs, and our fair share of brain cells. Luckily, we’re both of the opinion that nothing worth doing is easy! And so, we push through the struggles of slowly building our own platform with the sunny expectation that others will soon join us on our adventure.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At a surface level, our strength as a team is that we’re both jacks of all trades.

Kayla double majored in Classics and Broadcast Journalism, worked in the film industry in LA, and spent a year working in a hostel in New Zealand. She was formerly fluent in Latin and may remember enough to perform an appropriate exorcism.

Emily lived in Orange County, California before moving to Kansas City at the start of high school. She majored in Public Relations, works in Marketing, and has written for as long as she can remember. Nowadays she’s a mom of a human child and several cats and spends her free time lost in abandoned buildings.

Together, we bring a lot to the table! I think what we’re most proud of is our ability to do things ourselves. We’re a two woman operation!

What’s surprised us most about our journey into the paranormal are the occasional spurts of bravery we find while investigating. While we’ve both always loved the idea, ghost hunting was never something we saw in the cards for ourselves. Overall we’ve felt the most rewarded while on location, investigating a dark, haunted place with a newfound friend who shares a similar interest in the macabre.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
A loaded question! Which I suppose is the marker of a happy childhood (a good problem to have).

For Emily, her fondest memories are spent biking to the coast with her dad and spending afternoons exploring the beach. Or rainy days spent at Disneyland, fingers sticky with the syrup from Mickey Mouse pancakes. Or riding bikes through the park with her grandma, a hot breakfast in one basket and a little dog in the other. Or forcing her family into a haunted tour of the Queen Mary only to be escorted from the shop halfway through.

For Kayla, it’s hard to choose a single favorite childhood memory! I was very fortunate to grow up with parents that loved to travel. My favorite family vacation was probably to visit our family friends in Portland, Oregon and traveling to the coast to Astoria and driving around to find the school where the movie Kindergarten Cop was filmed and the filming locations for The Goonies too! Also, my family always indulged my love for the paranormal and every city we visited we took a ghost tour which is a fantastic way to learn about a town’s history by the way!
