Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Hensley and Cherie Rushton
Hi Kristy & Cherie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our story began when I changed jobs and met Cherie. We were instant friends. I had been making polymer clay earrings for myself for fun and it turned into a small side hustle. I found out that Cherie had been making and selling leather earrings. Once we discovered that we had similar talents and passions, we decided to team up and sell at Pop-up Shops and Holiday Marts together, but under our separate businesses. We quickly realized that it would be more advantageous for us to combine our resources and creativity and become an official General Partnership. We combined our two business names (K Hens Creations and Handmade Marketplace KC) and KC Handmade Creations was born. Our small side hustle has continued to grow and gain loyal followers. We love to create KC-themed novelties, gifts, and jewelry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting your own business is always a challenge. We both came from the background of a hobby becoming a side hustle, so taking the leap to create a real business has been quite an experience. We have had ups and downs and still have a lot of growing to do.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We specialize in custom engraving and laser-cutting novelties and gifts. We design and create jewelry made from wood, polymer clay, and acrylic. We love designing for clients and enjoy the challenge of creating something unique that meets the customer’s vision. We have created custom coasters, keychains, shirts, cheese boards, ornaments, earrings, teacher appreciation gifts, and wooden keepsakes with picture engraving. We always say if you can imagine it, we can make it.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think people find it interesting that I am a high school assistant principal and Cherie is our office’s administrative assistant. We work together all day at school and then grind away in the evenings and weekends on our business.
