Inspiring Conversations with Austin Moss of Capital Collab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Moss

Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up splitting my time between my family’s 3,000-acre farm in Western Kansas and Kansas City, where I moved with my mother and brothers to in 4th grade. The dynamic of going back and forth between the farm and the city had a profound impact on me. On the farm, I started working at the age of 12, learning the value of hard work and perseverance. At 15, I got my first city jobs, Buffalo Wild Wings Cashier & Holiday Inn Banquet Server, which introduced me to a different type of responsibility and further developed my work ethic.

Before officially launching my first company, I explored various side hustles, like making custom burnt CDs with personalized labels and trading sports cards. These early ventures sparked my entrepreneurial spirit. At 17, in my Junior year of High School, I launched my first marketing company, which gave me real-world experience in business and entrepreneurship.

I purchased my first home at age 19, but I didn’t fully get into real estate investing until my mid-20s. It was then that I started buying single-family homes as a personal investment strategy to build long-term wealth.

Throughout my career, I’ve started multiple businesses in and around the areas of business and finance, including fintech companies focused on helping entrepreneurs navigate the lack of lending from traditional banking. More recently, I’ve become a partner in several companies, including a design-build firm called Capstone Homes, and a venture capital firm, Black Bay Impact Venture Fund, expanding my reach across various industries. I also host “The Austin Moss Show,” a podcast focused on business growth, entrepreneurship, and self-improvement, where I share insights and interview leaders across various industries.

Through all my successes and failures, what drives me is a mission to help others—whether it’s providing capital solutions, mentoring entrepreneurs, serving families in third-world countries, or building communities. My journey has taught me that success isn’t just about financial growth but about designing a life where business, family, spirituality, and health come together harmoniously.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Anything worthwhile in life never is from my experience. The journey of building multiple businesses, especially in the finance and lending space, comes with its fair share of challenges. Early on, I faced the common struggles of any entrepreneur—figuring out how to manage cash flow, scaling efficiently, and constantly balancing risk versus reward. But those were just the beginning.

One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced was learning how to navigate partnerships. In the early stages of one of my ventures, I had to buy out a business partner, which was a tough but necessary decision to ensure the long-term success of the company. This taught me a lot about trust, alignment, and the importance of having the right people in your corner.

On a more personal level, balancing the demands of growing businesses with personal life and maintaining mental clarity has been an ongoing challenge. There were times when I was so caught up in the hustle that it affected my relationships and health. Overcoming that required me to take a step back, re-prioritize, and learn how to design a life where family, spirituality, and health were just as important as business.

Of course, there are the external challenges too—navigating regulatory changes in the lending and fintech industry, adapting to the fast-paced evolution of technology, and working to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market. But these challenges have also been opportunities for growth. Every obstacle has pushed me to become more resilient, adaptable, and thoughtful in how I approach business and life.

These experiences have shaped who I am today. They’ve taught me that success doesn’t come without sacrifice, but if you’re willing to learn from the struggles, you can create something truly meaningful and impactful.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
There are several books, apps, and resources that have had a profound impact on my journey, both personally and professionally, and I rely on them to help me do my best in life.

When it comes to books, I’m a firm believer that reading the right material can shift your mindset and unlock new perspectives. Some of the books that have shaped my outlook on business and life include:

• “The Magic of Thinking Big” by David Schwartz: This book helped me understand the power of mindset and thinking beyond limitations. It reinforces the idea that success starts in your mind and that bold, expansive thinking can open doors to opportunities.
• “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki: This was a game-changer for me, especially early in my career. It opened my eyes to how true wealth is created through passive income and investments, rather than just relying on earned income from a job. The concepts around leveraging business and real estate to build lasting wealth still resonate deeply with me.
• “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook” by Gary Vaynerchuk: GaryVee’s concept of giving value first—through content, guidance, and interaction—and then asking for a sale or call to action has shaped my approach to business and personal branding. This book helped me refine my content strategy, ensuring I’m always leading with value before making any asks of my audience.
• “Day Trading Attention” (also by Gary Vee): This idea drives how I approach content creation, marketing, and staying relevant. Gary’s philosophy about capturing attention in a world with endless noise really speaks to my belief in using social media and content to build relationships and influence long-term.

In terms of apps, I like to keep things practical and streamlined. Some of the apps that keep me productive and grounded include:

• ChatGPT: The efficiency hack for this decade! If you haven’t downloaded it and used it in a creative manner for your personal life or business life, please do before you get behind. This is going to change things for everyone!
• Aura Health: The meditation and mindfulness aspect of my life is extremely important, and Aura helps me stay centered with guided meditations that fit into my busy schedule.

As for podcasts, I draw a lot of inspiration from listening to thought leaders in the business and self-development space. Some of my favorites include:

• The GaryVee Audio Experience by Gary Vaynerchuk: His views on entrepreneurship, attention, and branding align closely with how I approach my businesses and personal brand.
• The Tim Ferriss Show: Tim’s interviews with top performers from various industries provide insights on productivity, mindset, and innovation that I regularly incorporate into my life.
• The Game Podcast by Alex Hormozi: I appreciate how Alex breaks down complex business strategies into actionable steps. His no-nonsense approach is something I admire and apply in my own businesses.

Overall, I believe that learning from a variety of resources—whether through books, apps, or podcasts—keeps me sharp, focused, and continually growing both personally and professionally. These resources are the backbone of how I stay disciplined, manage my time, and push forward in life.
