Rising Stars: Meet Amber Myers of Richmond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Myers

Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I officially started Cakeable in January 2020, however I have been hobby baking for family since I was about 12 years old.

I have a background in graphic design, and I have always considered myself an artist. As a child, my dream was to become an animator for Disney. Even though my priorities have shifted since then, I have always found myself drawn to hobbies and careers that allowed me to express myself creatively.

In 2013 I became a mom and made the choice then to stay home with my kids. Our second child was born in 2016 and in 2017 we moved from our home state of Illinois to pursue new opportunities in Colorado. At that time, my kids were still young and had not started school, so those first couple of years I wanted to make their birthdays extra special since they hadn’t really made friends yet.

My oldest was very much into baking shows like “Nailed It” and “ The Great British Bake Off” so he would challenge me to make extraordinary creations and we would have fun planning and designing their cakes based on what they were into at that time.

We started to meet other families, and they started school. The creations continued as we started to have parties for them. The other parents were impressed, not only by our cake designs, but the flavors and my ability to make gluten-free cakes (that actually tasted good!)*

*many people in our family have celiac disease and I had been adapting my recipes to accommodate their needs. I have over 50 flavors that I have adapted to gluten-free as well as vegan options and that has always been a hit with my customers.

I was encouraged by many of the parents and other friends in our community to start a cottage business from my home, and just “see where it goes.”

Within the first year, I had grown my business from doing about one cake every month or two, to booking 3 to 5 orders per week and I started doing weddings in the summer of 2021.

I am fullyself-taught, however, I have always surrounded myself with other foodies, professional chefs, and bakers that have generously shared their tricks of the trade. YouTube and social media have also been great teachers throughout my journey.

In 2024 we decided to move to the Kansas City area for new opportunities for my husband’s work. It was a hard decision that we did not take lightly. Cakeable was growing rapidly, and it was hard to walk away from the many opportunities that I had at that time. However, I was going through some health issues that were making it difficult for me to keep up with the demand by myself. It just seemed like a good time to take a break and reevaluate my priorities both in life and with my business.

I learned a great deal about what works, and what I can do differently- and I have had the time to gain some new perspective in regard to my business.

After a five month hiatus, I am ready to get back to my passion of creating delicious and beautiful cakes for the most special occasions. It truly brings me joy to be of service to my community in such a beautiful way- by providing joy through food. Feeding people has always been my love language, and I am excited to share that love with the Kansas City community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Juggling a booming home-bakery business, raising two kids, battling health issues, as well as being a self proclaimed “people pleaser” definitely brought some challenges on this journey.

Cakeable grew faster than I was really prepared for, and during that growth I tended to neglect my own needs in order for me to say “yes” to everyone else’s requests.

This lead to a burnout I had never experienced before. I didn’t realize it at the time, but upon reflection, I do feel that this sort of “self sabotage and negligence” most likely caused a number of the resulting health issues I have since been dealing with.

I do personally believe that everything happens for a reason. That season of my life gave me the opportunity to recognize and reflect on some of my unhealthy tendencies. I am a constant work in progress, and I have learned to give myself more grace when learning these lessons along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have always had a creative mind as well as a sensitive soul. I do feel the draw to help people and I am happiest when I am able to celebrate others. Some may describe me as a “ jack of all trades” and I love when I am able to put my skills and talents to good use when helping others.

Throughout the years, I have found that I enjoy cooking and baking for people the most. I love providing beautiful, unique, and delicious celebration cakes- especially for weddings. Not only do I get satisfaction from the end result, but I find the process of getting to know my clients and making a custom cake or dessert spread that reflects their personalities extremely rewarding.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Connecting with people, being freely creative, and a little whimsical are what brings me the most joy in life. I tend to struggle with anxiety when I am forced into a box doing the “mundane things” we all have to do. I am at my happiest when I am creating art, music, cooking for others, or helping in my community. I have big dreams and ideas and I get excited about what the future holds. Creating and appreciating art gives me hope for the future and an optimistic outlook on life.
