Today we’d like to introduce you to Yawa Mensah
Hi YAWA, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2020, I was employed at a clinical research organization. The job was extremely taxing, often leaving me in tears at the thought of another workday. The stress took a physical toll on me, leading to hair loss and skin issues. Additionally, the long hours kept me away from my young children, which was heart-wrenching.
To cope, I found solace in my hobby of making soap and lotion. When I decided to leave my job, I felt a strong urge to change my career path. As a chemist, the most feasible option for working from home was soapmaking. It’s been nearly five years since I embarked on this entrepreneurial journey. It’s had its challenges, but I cherish every moment of it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Along the way, I’ve faced imposter syndrome, constantly questioning whether I was truly cut out for this journey. A lack of funding and cash flow made it difficult to grow the business, while acquiring and retaining customers has been a constant challenge. On top of that, I’ve had to wear all the hats, from product creation to managing the business, without any help. Marketing and increasing brand awareness have also been tough hurdles to overcome, but each challenge has been a learning experience that’s pushed me to grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business, Yawa & Co., specializes in handcrafted, natural skincare products, with a focus on creating luxurious, sensory experiences. We’re known for our commitment to small-batch production, ensuring every product is made with care and attention to detail. What sets us apart is our emphasis on high-quality, natural ingredients that pamper the skin while also providing a spa-like experience at home. I’m most proud of the authenticity of our brand and how we’ve stayed true to offering products that are both indulgent and beneficial. I want readers to know that our offerings are designed not just for skincare but for self-care, bringing relaxation and rejuvenation into their everyday routines.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has played both a positive and challenging role in my life and business. On one hand, starting Yawa & Co. during the pandemic was a result of turning a stressful situation into an opportunity. It felt like good luck that I could turn my passion for soap making into a business at a time when self-care and natural products were in high demand. On the other hand, I’ve faced bad luck with cash flow issues and challenges in acquiring customers, but I’ve learned to navigate those hurdles by staying resilient and focusing on growth. Ultimately, I believe luck opened some doors, but hard work and determination have kept the business moving forward.
