Daily Inspiration: Meet Erin Garr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Garr

Hi Erin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born on October 21, 2002 as the youngest to Robb and Debbie Garrr. My older brother, Matthew, is now 24 years old and studying School Psychology at Colorado University at Denver. As a child, I enjoyed playing sports such as volleyball, basketball, and soccer, as well and partaking in band playing the flute and taking dance classes. I went to elementary school at Good Shepherd, and High School at Bishop Miege. I was an honor student, and decided I wanted to continue on studying Biology and Chemistry. As a teenager, I developed a love for volleyball and received a scholarship to play at Stony Brook University in New York. While at Stony Brook, I went through a challenging time where I did not feel like myself, and I decided to transfer schools and pursue a career I really loved in art. I transferred to Eckerd College in Florida, where I now study Film and Visual Arts. I plan on graduating in December and getting a job in film production.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it definitely has not. I have long struggled with my mental health and finding my true self, which has led to lots of big changes, none of which I regret. For a long time, I thought something was wrong with me because I did not feel like I had a passion for anything. I have made lots of huge decisions, such as transferring schools and quitting volleyball, that made it feel like my whole life was flipping around and changing. However, I trusted my gut and new that I would be happier on the other side, and being able to make these changes has made me a much stronger and authentic person. I have now realized a passion in filmmaking, and I don’t think there is anything that can stop my dreams from coming true.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Over my career as an artist, I have used several different mediums, but my favorite by far is film. I have made several short films while in college, most often talking ideals of individuality and perception. I am most proud of my most recent film about my relationship with the sport of volleyball. The meaning of it changes with time, as I created the film while I was still playing, and it helped me realize a love for film that I no longer had for volleyball, and in a way the film created a bridge for me to cross. I think what sets my films apart is how I question perception, even my own, in my pieces of art.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Coffee, rain, mountains, my cat, my friends, sunrises and sets, swimming, hiking, camping, a book obsession, my family, my roommate, trees, the wind… I could go on but I won’t to save us all time. I think that there are not things in the world that make us happy, but things that we can find happiness in if we just take the time to look for it. Someone I care about once told me: Happy people don’t wake up happy. This changed my whole idea of happiness. Happiness is a skill just like anything else, and can be created through practice. I choose to see these small things and be with my people and feel happy,
