Inspiring Conversations with Tina Quarles of Centered Mind Therapy and Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Quarles

Hi Tina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I remember the moment I decided I was going to be a clinical social worker. I had spent weeks interviewing both law enforcement and lawyers trying to decide where I would have the most impact on the lives of women and children. Their responses were eye opening and heart breaking. The day I interviewed one of my oldest friends who has been a social worker for years, I was struck with a driving force. I knew this was something that I was going to fulfill my purpose. I did not know how I was going to do it as a single mom with two children, but just decided I was going to do it. Soon after that day I met with a representative of KU and began taking courses to start down the path that led to a second bachelor’s degree, a masters degree, and then a clinical licensure (LSCSW) as well as a certification as an Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP).

When I look back at my adult life, through the good times and the difficult, I believe I have maintained a constant and consistent path to becoming a therapist, even though that was not my initial intent. My passion and desire to help others has helped me build the skill set necessary to not only excel in my chosen path, but change the lives of others. I have a crowdfunding campaign open for donations with the intent of providing those without the means for therapy an opportunity to transform their lives with free coaching: https://www.ifundwomen.com/projects/mindset-coaching-all-women

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I grew up with my sister in a double wide trailer insulated by newspaper in rural Oregon, where alcohol and drug use were a part of the culture. My parents worked back breaking jobs until their bodies literally wore out. Working non-stop, they still could not make ends meet. We survived on whatever we could hunt or grow, government cheese, and powdered milk. Poverty comes with many challenges that are beyond not having enough money. Anger, frustration, sadness and confusion are just a few that I personally experienced. I dove into academics and sports to escape. I relied on my strengths as a top athlete and student to reach my goal of being accepted into a university. I received my first degree almost 23 years ago in Business Administration.
Since then I have earned two more degrees, licensures, certifications, and won fitness competitions while raising my two school aged children alone.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Centered Mind Therapy and Coaching?
I am committed to creating a safe and welcoming space for my clients to explore their experiences and emotions. I believe in the power of therapy and humor to transform lives and have dedicated my career to helping others achieve their goals.
I am an 11-time fitness competitor, a 20-year personal trainer, and a five sport athlete. I believe your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs affect your health. I use evidence-based approaches to improve your health and wellness for lifelong lifestyle changes.
I use a “whole body approach”, which means a variety of things:
I ask about how you sleep, how you eat, and how you move, amongst other factors that may affect your lifestyles.
I make it a priority to find which self-care methods work best for you as an individual, and how to incorporate those into daily living.
I encourage collaboration between me, your doctor, your physical therapist, and your dietician, to ensure that your healthcare team is working together when necessary.
One of the end goals is healing the relationship between your mind and your body.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My frank, laid-back, and humorous approach creates a comfortable and open environment in therapy. This relaxed atmosphere encourages clients to be more authentic, leading to greater progress in their therapeutic journey.
