Meet Darwin May of North Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darwin May

Hi darwin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always had a passion for business, even from a young age. I remember trying to sell my toys to my friends at school, always looking for some way to make money. Over the years, I’ve dabbled in different fields—retail, transportation, music production, and even equipment rental. Eventually, I found myself running a limo business.

It’s been a challenging journey, especially considering my visual impairment—I’m totally blind. People often wonder why I chose to run a limo business under those circumstances. I tell them, I’m the paper pusher and the brains behind the operation.

This isn’t the first time I’ve faced this kind of reaction. For example, when I used to set up equipment for events, people would often stop and stare, not realizing I was blind. They were amazed that I could do everything so well despite my blindness. It’s a similar situation with my limo business—I might not drive the cars, but I ensure everything runs smoothly.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first major struggle was during the acquisition. I didn’t purchase the entire business—I actually bought its assets and then had to redesign the business model based on how I envisioned it should operate. The previous company had very limited social media presence, almost no website, and very few reviews. In today’s business world, those things are crucial for success.

Although the company had been around for at least 22 years, which did help in some areas, I felt it wasn’t reaching its full potential. It was underselling its services, and I knew it could generate more revenue with the right changes.

Another significant challenge came after the purchase when I assessed the fleet. Unfortunately, the vehicles weren’t as well-maintained as I had been led to believe during the initial sale. This meant I had to invest more money than anticipated to bring the fleet up to the standards I expect for a limo service.

On top of that, I faced challenges with branding, particularly creating a logo that would appeal to others. Since I’m totally blind and couldn’t see the design myself, this was especially difficult. We decided to stick with the original company name and incorporate a great white shark into the logo, which helped it stand out.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve worked in a variety of roles, from food service to assisting with teaching music at a Boys and Girls Club, as well as in manufacturing and customer service. Through all of these experiences, I realized that I didn’t enjoy working for others and wanted to be my own boss as much as possible.

Even though I knew that running my own business would still involve working with customers and handling similar tasks to those I did in my previous jobs, I believed I could do a better job of meeting customer needs than many of the organizations I worked for. So, I spent a lot of time thinking about different business strategies and ideas, and eventually, I was able to put those ideas into action.

I have to give credit to those past jobs—they helped me develop the ability to think outside the box, which has been invaluable in my entrepreneurial journey.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
