Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Crockett
Hi Lindsay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Interior Design from the E. Fay Jones School of Architecture—Woo Pig Sooie! I knew from a young age that design was my passion. Throughout my education, I became keenly aware that my strengths lied in organization and that I favored residential design. My college experience, however, was more commercial-centered, so when I graduated, I launched my career designing large scale churches and schools. After two years, I moved to residential design with a small boutique firm. I honed my residential skills for the next 7 years and ultimately realized that owning my own business was what I wanted to do next and here I am!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As far as venturing out on my own, I cannot complain. I have been fortunate to have consistent business. Word-of-mouth, social media, and referrals have been of tremendous help. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some ‘bruises’ along the way. When it is just you and a few others with your hands in a job, there is less room for error. You quickly learn that you need to be on your ‘A-game’ all the time. I have learned a lot about trusting my instincts, being quick on my feet and assertive when needed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Throughout my career, I have had the good fortune to be able to do lots of different things. From something as simple as selecting fabrics, to space planning, to drawing the exterior elevation of a new home build, I have found each to be helpful as I hone my craft. I would say my “sweet spot” is in custom home builds. I love the process from start to finish! My abilities stretch much further than just selecting paint colors and cabinetry design. I thoroughly enjoy being the person you turn to for help during the WHOLE process—from beginning drawings, to finishes, to project management, to listener, to communicator. I love being the liaison between builder, contractors, and homeowner to get the job done right. There is nothing more satisfying then assisting a homeowner with the home of their dreams.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Do not do everything on your own. I cannot stress this enough! You will not be able to create and manage a website, curate marketing content, manage your books, invoicing and taxes, etc., and also do the actual job you are hired to do. Recognize your weaknesses and find a way to source these out. Prioritize what is important to you and take the first year to cultivate 2-3 things you know you really want to do well as a small business owner. You can’t be successful if you are always stressed out! Remember, at the end of the day, you are your own boss, and you really want to be enjoying what you do and have your work reflect this.
