Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryanna Gordon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up with a deep appreciation for drawing and photography. My mother studied art at one time so I like to think I get my passion for creativity from her. During family vacations I would assume responsibility as “the family photographer” and capture everything from my childlike perspective. This perspective happened to be mostly from the waist down so there are lots of chopped off heads, but as my biggest supporter, my mother and sure every photo made the scrapbook.
During my young adult years I initially pursued a career focus in Engineering. Women in STEM were “all the rage” so it felt like a safe choice for the future. I attended a few weekend classes and camps to learn about the different specialities to try to niche down my path, but in hindsight the fact I did everything but join robotics club is probably my sign that engineering wasn’t truly my calling.
The day my world changed was when I had a spare credit to fill on my high school schedule. Out of the corner of my eye, the words, “Media I” beckoned me. I would come to learn that this was the intro class to our high school’s video journalism team. Over the next two years I would be consumed by filmmaking and cameras and investigating news stories within my local community.
For college I chose to study Digital Cinematography at Full Sail University in central Florida. I worked with local production houses while studying, and before you knew it, I graduated and turned my hobby into a career. Back home in Kansas City, I was swept under the wing of producer Chris Knitter at Method Media, who has been a dear friend, guide, and mentor as I sought to make my mark in the KC scene. He has put me to work on music videos, feature films, and miscellaneous commercials over the years. I’m forever grateful for his support!
I experienced my first taste of the wedding industry in 2019 when a friend of a friend was looking for a videographer for their daughter’s wedding. I had no clue what I was doing business-wise, but I sure knew how to tell a story! It was a great success and I had such a fun experience with the couple that I wanted to learn everything I could about this industry. Now 6 years later, I’ve been able to work full-time doing what I love with both sides of my passion: photography and videography.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the greatest challenges I experienced when building my business was the first few years of the COVID pandemic. There was so much uncertainty about the market and how long the industry would be put on hold that it was mentally and emotionally extremely difficult to cope through. Shortly after the wedding side of my business came back, the filmmaking side experienced a halt with the writer’s strike of 2023. I am very fortunate that I have been able to lean on the other whenever the going gets rough, but having to adapt and overcome these obstacles early on in my journey was a true test!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in creating bold and authentic wedding photos and films at my personal business: Milestone KC. I like to think the biggest element of my work that sets me apart is my attention to detail. Every couple deserves beautiful keepsakes of their wedding day and a photographer who truly represents their vision. Whether it’s taking a few extra moments to remove something from the background, fixing strands of hair, or cracking a joke to get those genuine smiles, I just love celebrating love! It’s too often do we get distracted in producing our work that we forget the passion and joy that brought us here. I pour a bit of myself into each of my couples because they are who I make this art for.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite memories growing up is visiting my grandparents on their farm. During the summer I’d pick cherries and blackberries and ride four-wheelers with my grandpa through the orchards. My FAVORITE favorite thing was walking into the giant produce freezer on a scalding hot day and smelling the peaches wafting in the chilled air. In the mornings we’d take hay into the pastures for the cows and he’d teach me how to drive the truck. In the evenings my grandma would show me how to make homemade egg noodles then we’d all play cards until bed.
