Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Storey
Hi Nichole, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Photography was something I always wanted to do but never quite pulled the trigger on until I became a mom. I had attempted photography class in high school and let myself believe that it’s something I would never be that good at, even though I’ve always been creative and had the ability to look at something and recreate it as my own. After my son was born, I knew going back full time as a respiratory therapist just wasn’t for me, so I was racking my brain for ways to stay home with him while still making money to provide for our family. My son was 2 weeks old when the idea for a photography business fell in to my lap, I just knew that contrary to my prior beliefs that I was going to be successful at it. So I looked over at my husband, told him my idea, and he was super supportive, so I immediately ordered a camera that day. I’ve been extremely lucky to have friends that are already in the business that were more than willing to teach and even invite me along on their shoots. From there I’ve gained my own clients, booked weddings, and continue to grow.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest obstacle I face on a daily basis is self doubt. It’s too easy to get caught up in comparing my work to others but I have to remind myself that staying true to myself and my style is the most important part of this business. I still battle imposter syndrome on every shoot I do but when I sit down and am able to actually look at the shots I’ve captured it’s a great reminder that this is what I’m supposed to be doing in this season of life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a family and wedding photographer in the Kansas City area. I specialize in family and couples photography and have recently added wedding photography to my portfolio. I am most proud how much I’ve grown both personally and professionally since starting my photography business. The thing that sets me apart from others is my ability to make genuine connections with my clients, they always come as a client and leave as a friend.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those picking up a camera for the first time I’d want them to know that it takes time. Learning your individual style actually takes some learning and some failing, and not everyone is going to fall in love with your work and that’s okay. What matters is that you love it and it feels true to you.
