Today we’d like to introduce you to David Alston
Hi David , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m the 2nd born of 3 sons, raised in, at the time, a high crime project area by a single mother. Her actions of being e hard working multi job mom taught me far more than her words ever could. I was always curious about colors and recreating things. Not having the finances for many toys, etc, to keep me entertained, my aunt at the time would used 3 letter words to make images. That was the key that unlocked my imagination and got me on my way to broadening my future. I graduated as the schools best artist in 1980. I turned down art scholarships to enter the u s army to better myself as a man and help my mother financially. Art had become a past time activity as I matured as a person. A hobby and an outlet. Several years later I married and became a father of 2 boys. My greatest joy and challenge. The challenge became more intense as it led to divorce and with me raising my son’s alone. I came home from work early one day only to find the TV had been left on by my son. I was upset because this was a broken rule. The program that was on was Bob Ross painting. It recaptured everything that I ever imagined about my past life and possible future. From that day forward I was reconnected to art again, only this time in my life it wasn’t a hobby, but rather a passion. Now that passion has a fire that won’t stop burning.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The challenges have been juggling life as a parent, worker and trying to grow myself as an artist. Making the decision to remain single in order to fully dedicate myself to my craft. It’s been under valuing myself and my work in order to make a sale. Trying to bring down barriers in order to expand my work on a national level.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I practice 4 different styles of artwork in order to expand my reach of customers. Realism
Hyper realism
Spontaneous realism and
Monochrome
I’m predominantly recognized for my spontaneous realism style. I’most proud of over coming life’s challenges to get to where I am as a man and father first. The commitment to learning and reaching out to other artists who are on a higher platform.
What were you like growing up?
I was energetic and funny. I loved to entertain family, friends, etc. Either through artwork, comedic or imitations.
