Today we’d like to introduce you to David Creighton

David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
David Creighton, with DC Painting KC, began his journey in the painting industry when he was 18 years old while later gaining experience in roofing, roofing distribution and remodeling. By high school, he was working in the food industry which sustained him for a while but never really invoked a true passion. After a few years in food service, a friend of his connected him with a contractor and he quickly discovered where he wanted to focus and develop his career. His journey began followed by 16 years of hands-on work in the field before transitioning into leadership roles, showcasing his ability to network and delegate responsibilities effectively.

David’s life from a military family, broken homes, and being a sophomore dropout took a transformative turn to earning a GED while overcoming various legal troubles, and addiction. Juggling full-time work and single parenthood, he successfully graduated from Kaplan University with a degree in Business Administration and Business Management. With years of experience under his belt and a passion in the industry, he began thinking seriously about developing his path even further. In 2016, while walking to the river for some trout fishing, he had a very distinct feeling; “I heard a whisper of intuition that I should start my business, so that’s exactly what I did.” Within a year, he founded DC Painting KC with the mission to create a business that extended beyond himself to impact the lives of others.

““After I was introduced to painting and remodeling at the age of 18, I soon grew to favor the job site and the opportunity of transforming homes with undesirable conditions into spaces that homeowners could once again enjoy. That is exactly why I chose this industry. My goal is to build a lasting legacy for my family and the community. I also want to provide an environment for people to thrive while loving what they do as they work toward their personal and professional goals.”

David has lived in Kansas City since 2000. He and his wife have 6 kids—four girls and two boys. When he is not working he enjoys bow hunting for white tail deer. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is not much smooth about taking a vision to create a future into reality of something that is larger than oneself and beneficial to many. The struggles spread across every aspect of life spiritually, mentally, physically, financially, and in all relationships. One thing I found most valuable is self development. There is so much room for improvement in all areas of life so being complacent is not an option in order to progress forward and accomplish lofty goals. Who the future needs me to be to fulfill my dreams and aspirations is not complimentary to who I am now. This is a continuous cycle ever since I began this journey many years ago however my awareness of such has transpired more so in the near past. I’ve been learning to take obstacles and challenges as stepping stones in the shaping of myself and my future while finding the value in the opportunities despite how uncomfortable some of these situations can be.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Riding with my dad in his little red toyota truck on the military base at Ft. Riley where they did the training drills over the ponds. We rolled in there blasting Joe Satriani, ” Summer Song” off the Extreme album (well was cassette tape back then) and technically we weren’t supposed be there but we went cat fishing and I had a donald duck pole like most kids do when they are knee high, and I caught a catfish bigger than the pole. It stripped the gears in the reel but we got it to the bank and I out fished my dad that evening. That emarked me on a journey for the rest of my life to enjoy fishing and since passed down the tradition to my kids. It’s these type of things we can find in life to savor precious moments with our loved ones to always cherish as long as we exist.
