Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigale Sleezer
Abigale, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As cliche as it sounds, it’s true and it’s MY story. My grandma gifted me a cute pink toy camera on Christmas when I was around 4 years old and since then the camera never left my hands. Whether it was disposable cameras, taking pictures on my moms phone, to me buying my first camera to now, I’ve always had the spark in me to capture the moments happening around me.
By senior year of high school, I had already been known as the “picture girl” or “camera girl” because I was always capturing moments around school. Where’s Abby with her camera when you need her? I spent three years in yearbook and ended up as the editor for two. Not only did my love for photography grow, but I learned how valuable good leadership was. Motivating and guiding a group of individuals to the same goal- creating a compelling yearbook.
When high school was ending and everyone was talking about going off to college, I knew I wanted to pursue photography full-time. It was frustrating to hear people question whether I should get a “real job” or what else I would do besides photography. Despite the pressure to go to go off to a four- year college, I stayed true to my passion.
During COVID-19, I dove deeper into photography, expanded into videography, and started booking more weddings than I ever imagined. I pursued online college courses in Marketing Management to continue learning while saving money. After three years, I made the move to Kansas City, and today, I couldn’t be prouder of what I’ve achieved.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey hasn’t been entirely smooth, but overcoming challenges has been crucial for my growth as a photographer. Initially, doubts and criticism about pursuing photography as a career were common, with suggestions to opt for a traditional college education instead. Financial constraints also posed early challenges as I balanced investing in equipment and starting a business while still in high school. Managing the demanding role of yearbook editor alongside schoolwork required rigorous time management and dedication. The COVID-19 pandemic further impacted my journey, disrupting bookings and prompting me to explore videography to diversify income streams. Despite these hurdles, each challenge has been a learning opportunity, helping me strengthen my skills and determination in pursuing my passion for photography.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a portrait + wedding photographer and filmmaker based in Kansas City but eager to explore new places! One of my proudest achievements was being nominated for Kansas City Videographer of the Year in 2023.
My work is all about keeping it real. I thrive on genuine connections and lighthearted moments, believing that life’s best memories are made when we embrace authenticity. Whether we’re discussing life over coffee, planning our next adventure, or capturing your special day, expect laughter and unforgettable experiences.
As a self-taught creative spirit, I bring a unique perspective to my photography and videography. I’m not bound by tradition; I love exploring new places and celebrating life’s quirks through my lens. My goal is simple: to capture the essence of who you are—beautifully imperfect and authentically you.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a total goofball with a bubbly personality, always ready to crack a joke and make others laugh. I never took things too seriously and enjoyed bringing a light-hearted vibe to any situation. Sports played a big role in my life during middle school and high school—I played softball and volleyball and was a manager on the basketball team, because I still wanted to be involved but let’s face it, I couldn’t hoop, okay! 🙂
My love for traveling blossomed early on, especially during summers spent visiting my grandparents in Florida. The beach became a favorite destination. If you couldn’t find me at the beach you would find me at the lake with my friends and family or working at my families shaved ice business!
