Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Davis
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born on November 17th 1992 and raised in a middle to lower-class neighborhood in Kansas City, MO.
At 16, I gave birth to my son, Kamren, who is now 14 years old. I graduated from Center High School in 2011 and played college basketball for a year at Penn Valley Community College. The beauty industry was not initially part of my future plans, but during my time at Penn Valley, I met a well-known figure in the beauty industry who became my mentor. Under her guidance, I decided to pursue a career in beauty and earned my esthetician license from Entourage Institute of Beauty in 2017.
At this point my journey had been filled with so many challenges already but in 2020 I faced the worst of them all when I gave birth to a stillborn baby girl, Kylynne, a traumatic experience that left me devastated and unfocused. This loss profoundly impacted my life and mindset, pushing me to strive for a better future. Determined to honor my daughter’s memory, I moved from doing makeup at home to getting my own suite and eventually opening my own shop.
I couldn’t have done it without my spouse. In 2021, I married my best friend, who supported me through all these struggles. He encouraged me to take a leap of faith, trust my artistry, and believe in my ability to lead. His emotional support was crucial as I navigated the grief of losing my daughter and building my business. Today, I have a steady clientele, a cosmetic product line, and a thriving beauty bar in Independence, MO, with plans to expand my brand with a mobile beauty bus in the coming month.
Despite the rocky path and many mistakes, these experiences have shaped me into the successful business owner I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Having a child at 16 years old, I faced many challenges that teens my age were not experiencing, from balancing school and motherhood to managing societal pressures and financial strain. At 21, I went through a period of being lost and misguided, living a life that seemed to lead nowhere; and with the devastating loss of my stillborn daughter, which left me unfocused and unmotivated for a significant period. This heartbreak profoundly affected my life and mindset, However, this challenging time helped me realize the importance of being a great role model for my son and also served as a catalyst for change. Determined to honor my daughter’s memory, I focused on building a stable and successful career in the beauty industry.
This journey involved overcoming grief, self-doubt, learning from mistakes, and navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship, but these struggles ultimately strengthened me and helped to achieving my goals.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist specializing in makeup application, known for my bubbly personality and creative makeup work. I am most proud of being my son’s mother, but in terms of my career, I take immense pride in overcoming adversity and poverty to become my own business owner. What sets me apart from other makeup artists in the Kansas City area, and beyond, is my diverse and creative approach. I excel at working with all skin tones, types, shades, and ethnicities. My artistry ranges from the softest, most basic makeup looks to the most complex Halloween or SFX makeup applications. This versatility and dedication to inclusivity have helped me build a unique and respected brand in the beauty industry.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is ensuring that my son sees the value of hard work and dedication. It’s important for him to understand that, even though we come from very humble beginnings, we can rise above our trials and achieve our dreams. By demonstrating perseverance and resilience in my own journey, I hope to inspire him to pursue his passions and believe in his ability to succeed, no matter the obstacles he may face. Additionally, creating generational wealth is crucial to me, as I want to provide a stable and prosperous future for my family, breaking the cycle of financial hardship and building a legacy of success.
