My mom, ever the cheerleader, would always say, “You’ll be a designer someday!” Well, guess what? She was spot on! I graduated as an Art Director at an ad agency, living the dream of designing things for a living.

Life took a sweet turn, though, when I met the love of my life and started a family with three amazing little ones. Becoming a stay-at-home mom was an incredible experience, but a part of me craved an outlet for my creativity. You know, something that wasn’t just building forts out of blankets (although that was epic!).

We have this awesome tradition where you bring a sweet treat whenever you visit someone’s house. But with everyone getting more health-conscious, those sugary treats weren’t always the best option. That’s when the idea struck: fruit platters! But not just any fruit platters – these would be beautiful, eye-catching displays that would make people go “wow!”

Gone were the days of boring grocery store containers. I started arranging vibrant fruits on plates, creating these colorful masterpieces. They were healthy AND stunning! My friends were blown away by them, and even for my kids’ first birthdays, I designed these unique watermelon cakes – a much healthier alternative to the traditional cake (less mess, too, let’s be honest!).

In the beginning, everything felt like a creative playground. Naming the business, designing the logo, dreaming up fruit platters for all kinds of occasions – it was pure joy! Talking to clients about their special events, their hopes and dreams for those unforgettable days – that was truly inspiring.

But then came the not-so-fun stuff. Figuring out the perfect price point was a juggling act!

Understanding taxes and all the financial aspects that go into pricing my fruit platters – let’s just say it was a learning curve! And don’t even get me started on the early days of organization – figuring out the best way to run everything smoothly was a whole other adventure.

Balancing family and business? That was a battle for a while. I didn’t want to miss precious moments with my little ones while they were growing up so fast. But as any entrepreneur knows, there are sacrifices in the beginning. There was this picture in my head – a perfect balance of artistic beauty and practical sense. Finding that sweet spot between pure creativity and the logic of running a business was a bit of a challenge for the “spiritual and logical” side of me.

Thankfully, my amazing husband swooped in and took charge of that part! Honestly, though, my biggest supporters are my family. My kids and husband are my biggest fans, even when I’m being super critical of myself while creating new fruit carving designs. They (and my mom, sisters, and in-laws!) constantly cheer me on, and their love keeps me going.

So, to answer your question – was it smooth sailing? Nope, not always. But hey, those bumps in the road make us stronger, right? I’m grateful for every challenge, every high and low. They’ve all helped shape AZAYA Fruits into what it is today, and they’ve made me a stronger and more creative owner and designer.
