Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Klem and Robert Head.
Hi Sarah and Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We started as hobbyist rockhounds and collectors, where we would travel around on the weekends and holidays looking for places to dig up interesting crystals. At the first rock show we went to, we discovered bismuth and learned we could make the crystals ourselves at home.
It became a sort of obsession, and before long, we were selling them and couldn’t meet the demand, so Robert quit his job to make bismuth full-time. Since then, we have moved on to be full-time crystal dealers, with our shop in Shawnee as our home base. We also travel to sell at rock shows across the country at least once a month. We focus on mainly high-quality rare specimens or raw pieces.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It definitely has not always been smooth, but because it’s such a huge passion, we are driven to persevere.
Growing bismuth crystals was with a rudimentary setup and very finicky with mixed results. We weren’t always guaranteed to make good crystals consistently. Working with open flames and molten metal took many long days to grind out thousands of crystals to bring to big wholesale shows.
This was necessary to establish our inventory of natural crystals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
We offer unique, high-quality raw mineral specimens. When you hear of rocks or crystals, you probably think of a polished sphere or a hunk of amethyst. But it truly goes so much further beyond that in ranges of quality. We want to share the exquisite natural beauty with the world.
Many of our products are so rare that you can’t google comparable prices or even a comparable picture of them. We always have new and interesting products imported directly from every corner of the globe. We also find awesome domestic crystals when we travel the country to do rock shows, usually bought from a local who dug it!
Our show circuit is the heart of our business, traveling to cities such as Denver, Tucson, Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit, and much more. Our shop in Shawnee, KS, is our home base, where our rocks are on display and stored. We welcome anyone to come visit us and are open for retail business, we just ask for at least a 30 minute heads up. Unless we are on the road at a rock show, we will be there!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Sourcing our rare material is still a treasure hunt for us. And as with every treasure hunt, some luck is always involved.
Small parcels of high-quality material are our target, and once they are sold, there will never be another like them. While we work hard to ensure we put ourselves in a position to get this material, sometimes it feels like we are just along for the ride or that the rocks find us!
