Melanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Melanie, the founder of Kindred Spirits Studio.

My journey into entrepreneurship started as a medical receptionist. After college, I veered away from fine art to pursue a career in the medical field. Due to a back injury, I ended up on desk duty, which surprisingly led me to a role at a chiropractic college. I found my niche designing brands for graduating students’ private practices there.

Though my physical body couldn’t fulfill my medical career aspirations, my creative spirit was able to take on the heavy lifting. Since then, my business has evolved from a health and wellness focus to empowering female entrepreneurs through my creative studio.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey hasn’t been without its bumps, but if entrepreneurship were a smooth ride, everyone would be lining up for it.

Early on, I had to confront my ego, and I owe a debt of gratitude to my mentors for helping me navigate those waters. Criticism became a cornerstone of my growth—a tool for dismantling and rebuilding.

In a world where opinions can feel overwhelmingly subjective, and criticism sometimes feels like nothing but negativity, I learned the invaluable lesson of finding confidence amidst it all. “No” was never an endpoint for me, and failure was never an option—it was a redirection of paths.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my graphic design journey, I’ve specialized as a brand strategist, focusing on empowering female entrepreneurs. Guiding these women in crafting brands that authentically reflect their visions has brought me immense fulfillment.

What sets me apart is my dual expertise in graphic design and the medical field. Whether I’m developing a brand identity, designing marketing materials, or attending to someone’s medical needs, my approach is grounded in nurturing and attentive listening. This commitment to fostering a supportive environment ensures that each person or project receives the care and attention it deserves.

Throughout my freelance career, I’ve eagerly seized the opportunity to delve into different design aspects, constantly expanding my skill set. By embracing the diverse facets of my creativity and experience, I’ve been able to carve out a rewarding path in the ever-evolving realm of graphic design.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Kansas City holds a special place in my heart because it’s home.

As I reflect on my return after being away for five years, I find myself oscillating between a sense of familiarity and a surreal feeling of being a stranger in my hometown.

Rather than listing any particular dislikes about the city, I view this period as an opportunity for self-discovery—reconnecting with who I am and rediscovering my place within Kansas City.
