Today, we’d like to introduce you to Brianne Rose-Baker.
Hi Brianne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My story started in Omaha, Nebraska, and has taken loops and curves around the country since. I was raised by a single mom, so money was scarce, and messing up was not really an option. When you are not born into financial security, you quickly learn that even some of the tiniest mistakes can have huge impacts.
I had to go to school, had to do well in school, and had to seek as many opportunities as possible because my upbringing made it clear that things would not just be handed to me. As soon as I graduated from high school, I moved to Kansas City, and it felt like an entire world that I did not know was possible had opened up. I met all of these new people from different areas, studied dope classes that made my brain feel like it was dancing, and met my life partner to whom I’m currently married! As much as I love Kansas City, we have a complicated relationship because I’m always leaving it and returning.
The first time that I left was after college when I moved to New York for graduate school and ended up starting my private practice, Brianne Rose Therapy. Kansas City is home, and New York is a mentor. After seven years there, it felt important to take the knowledge and love that I gained from New York and bring it back to my home in KC. I still see New York clients today, but conduct groups and community-based work here in KC that fill my cup even more!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think taking a chance is ever a smooth road. I am lucky enough to say that confidence was never one of them, and I thank my mom for that. She has said in the past and truly believes that I can change history, and I walk around carrying those words with me in every room that I enter. The biggest struggles were usually financial.
As we all know, school is ridiculously priced, and becoming a licensed therapist is on the north end of a thousand dollars after you’ve graduated without the free time and scheduling to work, and day-to-day life used to be tight. My husband and I moved into our New York City apartment with $23 between the two of us. The idea of money, specifically lack thereof, holding me back was not something I was willing to accept. I pushed through with my empty bank account and tried and tried and tried until it finally worked out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I have a private therapy practice that specializes in trauma and emotional expression, specifically sexual trauma and anger management. I love this work. It’s important, and so many people need help because so many of us have been hurt in some way. I’m known for being challenging; I’ll ask the questions that you’re trying to avoid, point out the behaviors that you’re least proud of, and sometimes make my clients angry, but it’s all out of love.
I think growth and change start within. The world will never be perfectly aligned for us, but it will always have challenges, so the most important thing that we can do is make sure that we are ready to face these challenges with a strong back and a clear mind. I’ve heard from a number of people how helpful this way of going about therapy is and how life-changing it can be when it is embraced.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Versatility and balance are important. No matter how much I love my work, it is work.
Outside of being a therapist, I find balance by running, doing yoga, dancing wildly at concerts, making bowls at 323 Clay Studio, and playing a ridiculous amount of board games with my loved ones.
