Essence Powell

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
My journey started over 6 years ago when I took my first lash course; I had no clue what I was going to do with the bit of info I retained from the class. It was a cheap class, and I needed to learn more about the craft. After taking the class, I realized there was a lot that I needed to learn on my own, so I went to YouTube Academy! I was religiously looking at videos and taking notes. The journey of learning how to lash was very self-driven. I remember telling myself daily, “My journey is mine alone, and comparison is the thief of joy.” At the time, I had no real clients, just my overly used mannequin head, which I used for the past several months. I questioned myself a lot about if I wanted to keep at it. Many people in my area were doing lashes, so I would question myself and wonder if I had what it took to become a successful lash tech. I knew I wanted the life of a lash tech; I tried to control my schedule and make a lot of money in a couple of hours vs. being at work for 8-12 hours 5x a week. I tried to give myself a fair chance at this new craft. I was working as a CNA while still trying to pursue lashes. It was going okay; I utilized a spare room in my best friend’s basement and turned it into my first lash studio! I worked 2 16 -hour shifts a week around my CNA job so that I could have availability throughout the week for clients to book. I leaned on God a lot during this process and transitioned into entrepreneurship. I did lashes for 6 months in the spare room of my best friends basement, then took a leap of faith and got my salon suite in a building. Business started booming from word of mouth! I quickly became one of the best upcoming lash techs in the city. I quit my CNA job and began doing lashes full-time. I was in the salon suite for 2 1/2 years; it was going great, but the building announced it was shutting down. I had to move. While figuring out where I would relocate, Lash Out Beauty Bar contacted me to join their team, and I’ve been there for almost 3 years now. During the last 3 years, I had a daughter, obtained my esthetician license, and hosted many classes! The journey of becoming a momtreprenuer has been the most rewarding for me.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
I have had to deal with many storms while becoming a professional in the beauty industry. Being a first-time mom was my biggest challenge. Of course, I’ve had my fair share of unpleasant clients, slow weeks, and scheduling mix-ups, but nothing was more challenging than balancing being a mother and running a business. I quickly learned to take it one client at a time.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
