Steven Jennings

Hi Steven, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into the real estate sector was both unexpected and transformative. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I was deeply immersed in the service industry. My days were filled with the hustle and bustle of customer service, where each interaction was an opportunity to make someone’s day a little brighter. I thrived in this environment, leveraging my natural people skills and relationship-building penchant. Yet, as fulfilling as it was, I always sensed a potential for more impact, growth, and personal satisfaction.

When the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, it also paused my career path. This moment of global uncertainty became a catalyst for introspection. I began to question what I truly wanted from my career and how I could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives on a larger scale. Real estate emerged as an unexpected answer. It presented an opportunity to blend my love for engaging with people with my desire to contribute to one of the most significant moments in their lives—finding a home.

Transitioning to real estate was challenging. With no experience in the field, I had to start from scratch. This meant teaching myself the ins and outs of the real estate market, from understanding property laws to mastering negotiation tactics. I approached this challenge with the same dedication and enthusiasm I brought to the service industry. I spent countless hours studying, attending webinars, and seeking mentorship from seasoned professionals.

My background in the service industry proved to be a significant advantage. I approached real estate with a customer-focused mindset, prioritizing the needs and desires of my clients above all else. This approach and my knack for creative problem-solving allowed me to stand out in a competitive market. I found joy in guiding first-time homebuyers through the complexities of the market, negotiating deals that exceeded my sellers’ expectations, and creating marketing strategies that showcased properties in the best light.

Today, I am proud to be recognized as one of Kansas City’s top real estate producers. This achievement reflects not just my sales numbers but my impact on my clients’ lives. Each successful deal is a story of a family starting a new chapter or an individual realizing their dream of homeownership. These moments drive me to continue pushing boundaries and striving for excellence.

As I look to the future, I am excited about the opportunities. The journey from the service industry to real estate has been challenging, rewarding, and, most importantly, fulfilling. It has taught me the value of resilience, the importance of personal growth, and the power of making a difference in people’s lives. With the support of my partner, Nick, and the inspiration I draw from my clients, I am ready to take on whatever challenges come next, always aiming to exceed expectations and leave a lasting impact.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey from the service industry to becoming a recognized real estate professional in Kansas City has been far from a smooth road. Like any significant career transition, it was filled with its own set of challenges and learning curves. Here are some of the struggles along the way:

  1. Learning Curve: Transitioning to real estate without prior experience meant starting from the basics. Understanding the legal aspects of real estate, mastering negotiation skills, and becoming proficient in market analysis were steep learning curves. I invested significant time in educating myself through various resources, which was time-consuming and occasionally overwhelming.
  2. Building a Client Base: In the early stages, one of the biggest challenges was building a client base from scratch. Attracting clients and earning their trust was initially difficult without a track record or reputation in real estate. I had to rely heavily on my interpersonal skills, which developed in the service industry, to build relationships and slowly gain referrals.
  3. Market Competition: The real estate market is highly competitive, and standing out among more experienced agents requires creativity, tenacity, and a unique approach. I had to find ways to differentiate myself and add value for my clients beyond what was already available.
  4. Negotiation Challenges: Negotiating deals, especially in a competitive market, was a significant challenge. Each negotiation was a learning experience, requiring a delicate balance between assertiveness and diplomacy, and often under pressure to meet clients’ expectations.
  5. Emotional Rollercoaster: Real estate is not just a financial transaction; it’s a deeply personal journey for many clients. Navigating clients’ emotional highs and lows, managing their expectations, and sometimes dealing with disappointments (like lost bids or unexpected property issues) were emotionally taxing aspects of the job.
  6. Work-Life Balance: The transition also impacted my personal life. Real estate often demands long hours, weekend work, and being constantly available for clients. Finding a balance between my professional ambitions and personal time, especially maintaining quality time with my partner, Nick, and our three dogs, was challenging.

Despite these challenges, each obstacle was a stepping stone for growth and learning. The struggles along the way made me a better real estate agent and deepened my appreciation for resilience, adaptability, and the importance of a client-centered approach. Facing and overcoming these challenges has been instrumental in shaping the professional I am today, underscored by a commitment to positively impacting my clients’ lives.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor and effective networking is crucial for personal and professional growth, especially in real estate, where relationships and expertise play significant roles in success. Here’s some advice based on successful strategies in these areas:

Finding a Mentor:

  • Identify Your Goals: Before seeking a mentor, clearly define what you hope to achieve through mentorship. Understanding your objectives, whether learning specific skills, gaining industry insights, or career guidance, will help you find a mentor suited to your needs.
  • Leverage Professional Networks:
-Engage with local real estate associations.
    -Attend industry conferences.
-Participate in online forums or groups related to real estate.
These platforms often provide opportunities to meet potential mentors established in the field.
  • Be Proactive: Don’t hesitate to contact professionals you admire. Whether through LinkedIn, email, or an introduction at an event, a concise, respectful message that outlines why you’re seeking mentorship and why you believe they’d be a good fit can be effective.
  • Offer Value: Mentorship is a two-way street. Think about how you can also bring value to your mentor. This could be by assisting with research, offering your marketing or graphic design skills, or sharing insights from your service industry experience.
  • Join Mentorship Programs: Some professional organizations and companies offer formal mentorship programs. These can be excellent opportunities to connect with mentors who are eager to share their knowledge and experience.

Networking:

  • Be Authentic: Genuine connections are more valuable and lasting than superficial contacts. Show interest in others, listen actively, and share your experiences honestly.
  • Utilize Social Media: Platforms like LinkedIn are powerful tools for building and maintaining professional relationships. Engage with content relevant to your interests, share your achievements and learnings, and participate in discussions.
  • Attend Industry Events: Regularly attending industry events, workshops, and seminars is a great way to meet peers and industry leaders. Volunteering at these events can also increase your visibility and connect you with influential figures in the field.
  • Follow-Up: After meeting someone new, follow up with a message or email expressing your appreciation for the conversation and suggesting a future catch-up. This helps solidify the connection and opens the door for further interaction.
  • Build a Diverse Network: Expand your networking to real estate professionals. Expand your network to include individuals from various sectors, as diverse connections can provide unexpected opportunities and insights.

What has worked well:

  • Active Participation in Real Estate Communities: Engaging in real estate communities has been instrumental. Sharing experiences, asking questions, and offering help have expanded my network and opened doors to mentorship opportunities.
  • Continuous Learning: Demonstrating a commitment to learning and professional growth attracts mentors keen to invest in motivated individuals. Attending training sessions, acquiring certifications, and sharing knowledge have been pivotal.
  • Personal Branding: Developing a brand that reflects your unique approach and values can attract mentors and connections who resonate with your vision and ethos.

Mentorship and networking are ongoing processes that evolve with your career. The key is to be open, proactive, and genuinely interested in forming meaningful relationships. These strategies have facilitated growth and learning and contributed significantly to my success in the real estate industry.

In real estate, and throughout my career transition from the hospitality sector, I’ve learned that the relationships we build within our community are not just a foundation for professional success but also a source of personal fulfillment. As “ambassadors” for Kansas City, these connections allow us to deepen our brand’s impact, creating a network of mutual support that embodies the spirit of hospitality.

This principle has guided my approach to real estate, where I see every interaction as an opportunity to assist, inform, and empower. This ethos has enriched my professional relationships and allowed me to give back to the community that supports me.
  • Reciprocity and Support: The philosophy of mutual assistance has been pivotal in fostering a network where support flows both ways. By offering my expertise, time, and resources, I’ve found that this generosity is often reciprocated, creating a cycle of positive impact that benefits individuals, families, and the broader Kansas City community.
